About Me

I am a college prof. I teach European history and cinema, with a strong focus on Eastern Europe, Poland and Japan. I am one of these lucky film buffs who are able to use their passion for cinema in work.
The list of favorite films is too long. Same with directors, but I’ll try (and forgive me spelling errors, I don’t have time for this):
Juan Antonio Bardem, Victor Erice, Saura
Renoir, Melville, Chabrol, Tati (oh yes!), Pialat, Rohmer, Carne, H-G Clouzot
Otar Iosseliani, Polanski, Bunuel, Bergmann, Kaurismaki, Oliveira, Costa-Gavras
Antonioni, Bellocchio, de Sica, Fellini, Garrone, Germi, Olmi, Rossellini, Pontecorvo
Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, V. Shukshin, G. Chukhrai, Balabanov, Shepitko, Klimov, Vyrypayev
Munk, Wajda, Skolimowski, Konwicki, Stanislaw Rozewicz, Wojtek Smarzowski, Has, Kutz, Lech Majewski
Jan Kadar, Forman, Jan Nemec, Herz, Jasny, Passer, Hitilova, Menzl, Zelenka, Hrebejk, Svankmajer
Jancso, Szabo, Fabri, Tarr, Huszarik
Aleksander Petrovic, Goran Paskaljevic, Emir Kusturica, Slobodan Sijan
Fassbinder, Herzog, Wicki, Murnau, Lang, Seidl
Hiroshi Teshigahara, Akira Kurosawa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Kon Ichikawa, Yasujiro Ozu
Kubrick, Jarmush, Cassavetes, Chaplin, Keaton, Wilder, Wyler, Losey, Peckinpah, Hitchcock, Mike Leigh, Lindsay Anderson, Welles
Uff, enough for now.

Lucian Pintilie

I was very glad that Facets organized his retrospective in Chicago. But what happened to die hard fans of great cinema? The theater was practically empty. The Romanian Cultural Institute at New York published a wonderful booklet with interesting essays, excerpts of interviews, etc.

Yes Indeed. Le Havre may be his best although I still personally prefer the tragic comedy of Match Factory Girl and Shadows in Paradise it is a nice transition into happier endings... from what I've seen from his later work, don't you think? Drifting Clouds or Le Havre, I think he left the sad comic ending behind with Bohemian Life..

A bit of self-advertising. CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN HISTORY published my article on nationalist-communist filmmakers in Poland in late March. Details: Heroism, Raison d'état, and National Communism: Red Nationalism in the Cinema of People's Poland by MIKOŁAJ KUNICKI Contemporary European History, Volume 21, Issue 02, May 2012, pp 235-256

It's nice to see Kaurismaki on that list. :)

Argentinian "Odd Number." Excellent. I could not imagine anyone coming close to adapting Julio Cortazar's prose until tonight. Do we have any other adaptations? Also, I would like to learn more about Manuel Antin, the director? I have seen a pretty good number of Argentinian movies made during the last 40 years, but didn't have a clue that any films like this one were produced there in the 1960s.
