Me too. It had the very same effect on me.
File this under "Movies I Thought Were Perfect When I Was Younger But Are Only Okay Now."
Sofia's best to date. Still.
This film has the bravado of Scarface and neurosis of Taxi Driver. Early Gere is good Gere!
franks and beans
YES.
The glacial rhythm takes hold. A phenomenal film. Much more satisfying than the Cannes winner, Uncle Boonmee.
I believe if you're in New York for the next week you are legally obligated to see this at Film Forum.
The first time I saw this I was fortunate enough to catch it on the big screen... Godard wrote Truffaut saying something like, "it was bigger than the screen," and he was right.
This film was a turning point for me as an audience member. It will always be dear to me in that regard, my gateway drug to the power of cinema.
Overall, a very underwhelming experience.
Beautiful. Understated. Ganz and Hopper's performances are extraordinary. A revelation in crime cinema.
Why did they include that cheesy dream sequence? Without that I might have considered 4 stars.
I found it on Google: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2079591657829882950# Granted, the quality is shotty. But it must be watched.
BURSTYN, you beautiful beast of an actress.
Gena's performance is a given. It should go unsaid. But Zohra Lampert, her performance, however small, is so nuanced and pleasant. I can't get over the scene when Gazzara's on the phone with Rowlands in the middle of the night, and Lampert is playfully trying to distract him. So subtle and understated. It's amusing and raw and believable. This whole damn movie is a lesson in acting. And Zohra just looks amazing...
Remains one of Natalie's best roles. This is one of those great films under the guise of mediocre rom com. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x522cq_beautiful-girls-home-video-trailer_shortfilms
Perfect. Really.
That's Michael Margotta, Rudy!
Nicely made, but you can't get comfy with a main character who has models literally throwing themselves at him, drives around in a Ferrari the bulk of the movie (if someone isn't driving him), stays at elaborate suites in Milan, and can fly by helicopter at will. But it must be fun being best friends with Chris Pontius. A good film, regardless, but it's no Lost in Translation. A nice companion, though.
It's not who you take to this movie, if anyone, but who you think of walking out.
Lou Castel gives one of my favorite performances. Chilling, and yet, strangely endearing.
Brilliant, unnerving, powerful... Darren done good. Darren done real good.
It deserves it all. Just solid solid solid.
Gilliam had a good run in the 80s and 90s, what happened in the past decade one couldn't say. His stuff just got flat. That aside, Pitt's performance is great. One of his best to date, in my opinion. Does anyone else think of Depp's HST when they watch him, or is that just me?
Get rid of the Jackass gag scene with the shit, and the drawn out ending and you got yourself a decent film.
Stolen Kisses may be my favorite of Antoine's adventures, although it's very hard to truly commit to just one.
It was pleasant but I agree with Will Smit, I remember it more as though it may have been an extra on a DVD. Good observation.
Easily one of Godard's finer moments.
Pialat's first masterpiece. I know it's redundant to say it, but Pialat is the master of sincere, raw cinema. This is a prime example.
Really, Bob, do you need anyone other than Natalie Wood? But in all seriousness, a great piece of film. Sure, there's a definite sense of satire and farce, but there's also something real going on.
