hello everyone I’m new here…
greetings from colombia… war is an everyday subject here, which ,of course, is not the same as knowing about war…
curiously, as it happens with some african countrys that also suffer it constantly, there’s no good films about wars “made” here, I think we need them… as catharsis… you know…
onward to the topic
Some movies I like about war are the ones in which is treated as a very stupid thing, but deeply rooted in mankind…satires…
like; Duck soup, mash, dr strangelove, the great dictator…
Also I like the ones in which a deep reflexion over individual thoughts and acts on war is developed like; seven samurais, throne of blood, full metal jacket, the pianist, napoleon ( I don’t know how many movies have this title, so I’m talking about the french one from 1927- I think)
The one film about war that first impressed me was battleship potemkin… it really amazed me… it’s an idea of war that sticks in my mind
Of course there’s the display of movie mastery in many of the films that are mentioned in the forum, although I have to say that in some cases what I don’t like of those movies, are some of the ideas that seem to drive the filmmakers…
some of the them I haven’t seen, so I’ll try to look for them…
There are some movies which are more about the effects of war on individuals, and move me the most because of the character’s struggle to hold on their humanity… Chattahoochee… the bridge on the river kwai… papillon…
so what about us in the “third” world?
when I was young and short on money I couldn’t afford to import a legal copy of a movie I would like to see… It was very difficult in the absence of proper information to even know what good films were there too choose… Do “first” world country filmmakers and moviegoers care if a guy in bolivia, nairobi or guatemala has seen some of the great Bergman films?… the ethical critic of piracy has a point in attacking the morally reprouchfully act of stealing other’s property… about the idiotic act of undermine the things you like…
I know piracy is a crappy thing to do… but the options are really lame down here… of course there’s the internet legal buying, but the cost of a single movie that you want to purchase increases almost 300% and 400% in taxes and shipment… I have a job but 200 dollars in a single movie is still a lot… so I should buy five or six movies a year?… Some films are never shown here, and I’m not talking about obscure unknown films, I’m talking about, say… Deconstructing harry block from woody allen… woody allen guys… I mean, what can a movie-lover do?
if movies cost me 30 40 dollars, or I can go see them for 5 bucks in a theathre, that’ll be great…. I’ll be a good boy…
But would you deny 5 people the pleasure of seeing in a comfy coach The seventh seal?… or A woman under the influence?
why? Because we can’t afford to pay 140 dollars for each movie we want to see?
the legal market here doesn’t offers much, the few people that try to offer more have to deal in huge prices even for rent
Just now some Delivery companys are starting to offer P.O. boxes in USA so you can reduce the costs, still, if your’e lucky you’ll be paying double…
I deeply respect filmmakers, I was absolutelly on the side of the writers in the last strike, I agree with authors that want to do ther films without signing abyecting contracts… because I want to see what they do…
the film distributors have no interest in this market…is too poor… piracy is something you do out of greed or need… yeah sure maybe need is how you star in greed, that’s a risk…
I need to see movies, pals… I’ll do whatever I have to do to see them… even pay a decent price for a decent copy…
I have to choose between a arguably moral behavior or seeing movies… What would you do? honestly…
Well Mr Brooke I didn’t knew that, I speculated with the idea that it happens just like with history books… you need time to pass before things can be understand… thanks for the info… I suppose if bosnian could we could, still the filmmaking landscape here is rather sad …
violence in colombia, according to some experts, reach it’s peak about the 1980’s … time’s still passing…
Yes Mr Vellaem, I’ll buy too, I have buyed a few legal copys… just a few… because is irresistible…
The only thing I’m not sure about your comments is that “persistent illegal copying would delay legal distribution” … I don’t know…
the same thing, in a much bigger scale, happens with software and music, there has been a lot of efforts to fight this, but, as you point out, until the owners of whatever it is that is being pirated don’t pay attention and start to give better prices to local buyers…
If the local authorities would manage to prevent let’s say 70% of illegal copying,
Would that be an encouraging reason for distributors to jump into a small market?
can’t we say, in all fairness, that this companies are just too lazy to stimulate the growth of a market?
again, at the risk of sounding like a crying baby… they don’t care if a country needs desperately to widen it’s culture, it’s not profitable
for the moment we must keep doing what we can to make more people see more movies…
thanks for your comment
I don’t know why but the tom hanks, tom cruise, and…uhm… spielberg movies… all of them… I found no reasons really, so I guess is idiotic

did Kubrick get to work on the editing?

I’m new to the site. I like the sober design please don’t change it.
I read most of the suggestions, the sub-categories in the forum are a great idea, I guess after all the comments there’s gonna be changes about it, I don’t know if it’s too late to give an opinion… Anyway, going through the forums I see there’s all kind of people, some, very few as far as I saw, are quite…sensitive… about some subjetcs, maybe a space in the forum for us the beginners, not only to the site but to movies in general… one thing is watching a lot films other is knowing cinema… a space where some basic topics can be discussed, without fear of… harsh responses…or just plain indifference… it will be great too just ask about anything related to movies, there’s a lot people in the forum who I found very generous with their comments, maybe we could post a simple question and I’m sure there will be very enlightening answers, with time we the begginers will find more confidence to post, those who don’t want to deal with that sort of thing will know what to avoid, those who like to share what they know would be happy to help… I know this is not a school…
but it would be nice if this place, and the people in it, spread out the love for movies and culture in general, for what I’ve seen here, that’s the idea, isn’t?
also I would like to ask if there will be a problem (I guess not) if anyone should start a thread in any other language… like spanish? I really don’t know how many people who speak spanish are in the site, or if any of them are not participating because of the language… it’s not just to speak in my own language, but to talk about things related to movies that people in usa or europe don’t really know much or are not interested in…
after all, this is not a place for english spoken movies, the library has a lot of variety in every aspect including language, so…
I appreciate any comments

F for Fake?… well… is about reality an representation… wouldn’t that cover, in a conceptual way, movies? I think the ideas developed by Welles in that film can be directed towards Film-making…
If I could I would, seriously, I’ve been there, I guess I’m still there …but I’m South America…
There’s a topic here about piracy, and a lot people were in it, including me…
One guy asks for kindness and is totally ignored or gets the finger…
and then they say… why! oh why! oh lord! you allow such a thing as the black market to exists… oh the humanity!
so, look for free movies on the web or look for them in the black market… and share them. Always share, spread the love for movies…
