i recently saw Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django, and i thought the final fight towards the end of the film was nice. although only one of the characters had a sword… i also really like the final fight scenes in sword of doom, and hara kiri very much.
i dont understand the need for ‘favorite’, or ‘best’… there certainly have been many films which have affected me deeply, but i simply
cant compare them because i appreciate different things about each one. i love 2001, but i also love peewee’s big adventure. it’s only my opinion, i dont mean to be negative on the subject.
does anyone like Sun Ra, Albert Ayler or Ornette coleman? i dont think anyone has mentioned those guys, and theyre some of my favorites.
iv’e only listened to alice coltrane’s Universal Consciousness, but i loved just about every minute of it.
i also really love the soft machine, although it isn’t exacly jazz.
here is dictionary.com’s definition of the word entertainment:
1. the act of entertaining; agreeable occupation for the mind; diversion; amusement: Solving the daily crossword puzzle is an entertainment for many.
2. something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement, esp. a performance of some kind: The highlight of the ball was an elaborate entertainment.
3. hospitable provision for the needs and wants of guests.
4. a divertingly adventurous, comic, or picaresque novel.
5. Obsolete. maintenance in service.
i recently saw come and see,
and man, i dont think i’ve seen a war film quite like it. i thought it was quite moving.
i also really enjoyed The Color of Pomegranates, directed by Sergei Parajanov
wikipedia says antonioni, fellini and godard all considered it a masterpiece.
if i were on a deserted island, i’d want something to cheer me up.
so i’d bring:
cast away
swept away
lord of the flies
the beach
and sidekicks, just to mix it up.
ive seen:
fitzcarraldo
nosferatu
stroszeck
and aguirre.
i felt dissapointed with each of the above mentioned films to say the least.
perhaps that may change in the future, but i currently defy anyone to explain
to me why these films are considered so ‘great.’
i saw the film on friday night.i think i enjoyed seeing the trailer more than the film itself.
a few of the scenes were framed nicely, but for the most part, it made me dizzy.
i didnt think it was memorable.
Belle de Jour is a fine place to start.
the one with the eyeball getting sliced open is cool too. he co-directed it
with some lame artist guy… the name escapes me right now for some reason omg
i once read that andrei tarkovsky drunkenly sang the theme song to the seven samurai
for akira kurosawa, while they were kickin’ it in russia. he probably sang angelically
that day.
NAKED.
i first saw it on IFC when i was a teenager. upon first viewing, i just passed it off as an ‘artsy fartsy’ film.
nevertheless, several of the scenes contained in the film stuck with me, and as the years passed i tried
diligently to find the film and rewatch it, and sadly, none of the blockbusters or hollywoodvideos carried a
copy. and now, as a slightly more mature adult i’ve developed a much greater apretiation for the arts.
naked helped.
EETU: that shot has been used many times. BUT i agree about this whole kubrick thing. i saw it in the theatre, it did have a kubrickesque quality to it. obviously, paul thomas anderson is not stanley kubrick. he’s paul thomas anderson. but to deny that there is absolutly NO similarity between There Will Be Blood and Kubrick’s work….

i think that solves it.
