Name two countries, your two favourite directors from each country and your two favourite films from each director.
For me, it would be something like this…
JAPAN
Akira Kurosawa
-Seven Samurai
-Rashômon
Hayao Miyazaki
-Spirited Away
-Castle in the Sky
FRANCE
Louis Malle
-Au Revoir, Les Enfants
-Lift to the Scaffold
Jean-Luc Godard
-Bande a Part
-Vivre Sa Vie
Honorable mentions; GERMANY and François Truffaut.
No, no I wasn’t offended laughing emoticon. It’s not even that I thought it was a bad film, I just have a tendency to overestimate films with so much praise and then get let down and dislike it more than I would if I had no expectations, bad habit.
I think Seven Samurai should be excluded from this question, it’d be more interesting that way. After 7S I’d probably go with one of the Lone Wolf & Cub films, probably the third (outside of Kurosawa, I’ve yet to educate myself in great samurai films, it’s on my to-do list, though).
Akira Kurosawa is probably my all-time favourite director (so far, I’m still young and naive), I was wondering which Kurosawa Criterion releases take the cake in terms of special features and their cost (Seven Samurai looks amazing but for me to buy it locally it’s $110AUD which is somewhat ridiculous). I’ve never actually bought a Criterion dvd as I’m more of a bargain hunter when it comes to great films so I’m very inexperienced in their work, so the question is – what are your favourite Kurosawa releases on Criterion?

I’ve always hoped to make films that fit in between French New Wave and Akira Kurosawa, via Jim Jarmusch.

Hunter S Thompson’s ‘The Rum Diary’ – directed by Wim Wenders, that’d be interesting.

Bruce Robinson is directing the Rum Diary and I believe once again Johnny Depp is playing Hunter, looking forward to it.

Ghost Dog is pretty close to a contemporary samurai film, Jim Jarmusch is bad ass.
I didn’t think Sword Of Doom was all that great, I really want to see Seppuku/Harakiri and the Samurai Trilogy.
