It’s not like Dunham set out to break some kind of mold. It’s a great film within the twentysomething figuring it out genre.
@Tom Kern seems like you are judging the genre and not the merits of the film itself. Using your logic, no filmmaker should do an update on post-college ennui. Within that there are some valid criticism of the film for what it failed to accomplish. But you seem to just think trying itself is an automatic bad film.
@Alexandra I’m not a fan of being nice for the sake of being nice. It doesn’t really get you anywhere when discussing film/art. I actually get along better with people that bring it strong…state your opinion like you really believe it and tear apart the opinions of others.
wow strong sexism in this thread. double standard though so it’s all good right?
I could say that when it’s a bunch of women around they just compliment each other only to turn around and gossip behind each other’s back….could I?
@Alexandra being nice for the sake of being nice means being concerned about whether or not you’re going to offend someone with your opinion.
I got into a debate about Drive on another forum and pissed off a lot of people because I said that there are some people that are simply incapable of understanding the emotion that can be conveyed by having Gosling and Mulligan stare each other. I saw your post in the ‘what is art’ thread deploring pretentiousness. But you know what, I feel like that term is thrown about too easily when someone is defend a not-so-concrete point/idea.
But really that pic and text are out of context. They would probably be considered risque for their era (assuming they are flappers). They would be down for some no holds barred debates.
@G-LEGS hence why I prefaced what I said by saying double standard. You can stereotype men but heaven forbid you make a derogatory comment about the fairer sex.
@house of leaves how come you aren’t listed as being a mod on the ‘forum guidelines’ page?
Sure sure, respect is fine. But you run the risk of appeasing those that are easily offended when you put such an importance on civility and such. Truth be told, there is nothing anyone can say to me on an online forum that can make me feel disrespected.
In order for things to be interesting you definitely need to stir the pot once in a while. Or else it just ends up being a bunch of people glad-handing each other.
@alexandra I could not disagree with you more about what a good debate is comprised of and what makes a person an asshole. I’ll leave it @ that.
@odilonvert The internet falls down when people get too sensitive about things. If we all operate from the understanding that we are sharing opinions, nobody should get butt hurt.
But I strongly oppose the notion that an online community should feel the need to appease the sensitive. It’s simply not conducive to truthful discussions. I could broaden the scope of this discussion and take into how society coddles people nowadays, but I won’t ;)

Dumb thread I know but I’m new and just wanted to get that off my chest.
It would be nice if there was a newbie thread for people to lose their virginity in.

What is Art? 12 months ago
I once had the following epiphany -
art is basically….showing the public a glimpse of your own imagination/mind.
wtf is art though?
why did it start in the first place? there is obviously a need for it or else art wouldn’t exist.
like did some random dude just like go paint on a rock back in the stone ages…that’s first art?

Has anyone seen 2 Days in New York?
It’s a sequel to 2 Days in Paris.
Julie Delpy stars and directed both. I just heard about it. Can’t wait. Now just gotta find if it’s going to be in theaters round my way.

Like most of Wes Anderson films, I just didn’t get the characters. That left me on the outside simply looking at them instead of being involved.

the funny thing is that there have been some really truthful posts in this thread. some honest comments from people.
but everyone will focus on the silly over the top comments and rage over them.
