This blew my mind completely, I can't stop thinking about it. What a striking and compelling film which goes to show the very intestinal fortitude of motherhood. Watching this film with openness, identifying with Rita made me wince and writhe in sympathetic agony.
"Well, as the poet said... Still the years will pass, and not a trace will remain of me. Darkness and cold will enfold my weary soul." Exquisite, Ceylan!
In addition to the fact that Annette Insdorf's voice is completely and utterly gorgeous, her commentary track featured on the Criterion disc is highly recommended to all who loved this film but wish to understand more.
I saw this tonight at GIFF 2012 with director present. She said a lot liked it but also a lot hated it. I really liked the honesty of this film. I think that a lot of one night stands ends like Clara's does, and the feelings are the same. What happens in this film is not only what should happen, but it shows what a lot of young people like themselves are coping with, but never shares with anyone. Excellent debute.
2 stars by average? What gives?
Another two words: wanna watch. Now.
Extremely exquisite photography - but why on gods green earth is the trailed dubbe din English? Seriously? MUBI! Majorly disappointing.
I utterly and completely hate myself for enduring the 104 min it took to watch this. I'm not sure what's worse, the poor person who directed it (who by the way cannot be above 15; actually we were debating whether or not it was the Mexican cleaning lady of the film company who drugged the whole crew and wrote script), or me for actually watching. Rubbish. I better go wash the shame off me now. So filthy. So filthy...
Oh, Boris!
I would not call this all too original of a documentary, but well worth the watch. The interview with Katya (image) is quite unbearable to watch. As she is being questioned during five minutes or so, you see her gradually realizing what she is about to do, and how disgusted she is of her own action. The silence between the questions and her answers was strikingly emotional.
Back in 2007 when this premiered at the Gothenburg Film Fest, Gael García Bernal was hot stuff as a debutee of a director and a lot of attention was put in his direction. The film itself, to me it was a fantastic directorical debute with interesting topics. But it failed so remarkably in terms of cinematography that it wasn't even funny... Pity. Stil,l worth the 79 minutes it takes to view.
I seem to recall this had a weak synposis (alternatively a completely spoiling one) and now there is none visible what so ever. A new one on the way? Re-watched it today at our local cinematheque and it's utterly spellbinding. Photo by Doyle + the subliminal soundtrack is to die for. God I love it.
One of the best films I've ever seen. Glad it finally made its way to MUBI.
So sad I almost died a little. I hesitated in watching this but in retrospect it was totally worth it.
Amazing to the point of being insane, which I by the way completely agree with. Watch this!
Highly underrated Japanese cinema. Watch this!
This film was more shocking than any 70's-breaking-taboos-film I have ever seen. Period. Perhaps I have not seen enough. But I must agree on the fact that this was indeed the hardest film to finish I have ever, in my life, began. I haven't decided if it was worth to yet.
Quite possibly the best film I have and will see this year. A true pleasure.
Quite enjoyable indeed. Evidently wants more than what is getting through I think.
Wow, when did all of his films get added? Major thanks to the ones responsibly for completing one of Austrias top auteurs here!
Dark, suggestive and metaphorical tale with a plot that slowly but surely sucks you in. I personally find the narrative too much adrift to fully submit to this otherwise highly anticipated piece of Korean cinema.
I'm sorry to say that Avatar has nothing, never, ever in the history of eternity to do with this film. And I sincerely reject any comparison between them. Ever. Scusa.
I need to go to Bosnia and Herzegovina ASAP to see this!
Biography and more films from this great great director, please!
Visually and emotionally striking with superb acting features, I thought this was the best film to come out of Russia in the year of 2009. Some scenes will stay with me a long time ahead.
I want to watch this so badly now. Doesn't it even have a Romanian release date set?
I didn't realize this had been added here. Very glad to see it has! An incredibly beautiful film with moist melancholy that I urge everyone to view. Additional description in the notebook: http://www.theauteurs.com/notebook/posts/1137
Most Filipinos I've spoken to agree that they barely even exist on the pirate market in Asia. If you get the chance, seize it at your local film festival :)
Lake Tahoe is great but Duck Season is better. Add it!
While relying on subtle humor throughout, the relation and events of those two men sure has its moments as they set out to rescue the wife of a corrupt police officer in their neighborhood. Or when the old man sees a docu on philosophers statues (head on pillars) with no genitals. The old man grows concerned and starts to bake male genitals in bread form, then moves out in the neighbourhood to decorate local statues.
