How about a little Roger Corman/Poe/Vincent Price – especially the Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of Red Death, Haunted Palace, and The Tomb of Ligeia. Also throw in the supremely atmospheric The Premature Burial with Vinnie’s “replacement” Ray Milland and with the much missed Hazel Court. And pull in the magnificent Barbara Steele again (from the already mentioned P and P) for her performance in Bava’s best – Black Sunday.
Oh yes – Hammer please! Dracula: Prince of Darkness, The Mummy, Curse of the Werewolf, Quartermass II, The Abdominable Snowman, The Brides of Dracula, The Gorgon (atmo plus),
Moby Dick by Melville – half way through this long but beautifully descriptive book. I can’t believe I’ve never read it before…Next will be Donald Spoto’s Spellbound by Beauty – Alfred Hitchcock and his Leading Ladies (my favorite director is Hitchcock and favorite film is Vertigo)
Oh – I just saw the listing on Quantum of Solace. The director blew it totally by going with the “artsy”, hopefully short lived, trend of queasy-cam filming with unstable camera and rapid cuts so you can’t tell what’s happening at all. Sure am glad Casino Royale used the camera right so you could appreciate the splendid action and beautifully choreographed fights with the only Bond who comes close to Connery – Daniel Craig.
Vertigo
Pit and the Pendulum
Black Sunday (Italian)
Body Heat
Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure
Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
Psycho
North by Northwest
The Searchers (or Red River)
Vertigo
Psycho
Rear Window
Pit and the Pendulum
Masque of Red Death
Tomb of Ligiea
Hercules (Steve Reeves)
7th Voyage of Sinbad
The Big Sleep
The Tall T
Quartermass II
The Gorgon
Any film using hand held queasy cams and quick editing techniques that ruin films like Quantam of Solace or the Bourne movies or the third Mission Impossible. Any lunatic director who does this oh-so-trendy, artsy-fartsy crap just to fit in with the current mindless mass style of the day, and ruins the enjoyment of action scenes (and even talky scenes with the constantly bobbling image) and the contributions of stunt men and gives the trusting patron a headache ought to be forced to join a deeply pock-faced Barbara Steele in the depths of the castle for a good freaking out.

The recent movie The Happening. And I agree with Speed Racer. Anyone who hates Vertigo should be watched carefully.
