What kind of movies does criterion look for over 3 years ago

hello, i am new here so i am not sure the details of criterion releases. it looks like they mostly go after forgotten movies that should not be forgotten, could be wrong on that. i have ace in the hole, M, and the killers.

my question is what would prevent them from releasing a movie like “no time for sergeants.” it is a hilarious movie with andy griffith and don knotts, pre-andy griffith show. what’s frustrating is that no one has ever released that on dvd, all the bootlegs on ebay don’t count. i think ted turner owns it because once a year or so it pops up on TCM. i want an official copy of it for myself however no matter who releases it. thanks for any input you could provide.

Metropolis over 3 years ago

This movie has been released a couple of times, but even the best release is missing a few scenes. I heard last year a copy of the complete film was found in a museum in chile. it needs to be cleaned and restored obviously. how long to you suppose that process takes before it can get a dvd release and should criterion release? i enjoyed fritz langs M. a lot.

than you for informative and intelligent responses. i used to look at forums on imdb a lot and they were just too annoying. if i posted a question like my earlier one there, half of the responses would have been like: “that movie is stupid and unfunny, andy griffith is gay, so that means you’re stupid and gay for liking it.” i think i’ll keep checking the boards out on this site.

Best War Movie(s) over 3 years ago

the great escape, paths of glory, dr. strangelove, braveheart (i still like mel gibson)

apacolypse now to me is one the most overrated movies. i watched for two hours thinking this is okay and then at the end nothing happened. martin sheen is staring at some fat, bloated idiot telling us he is mesmorized by him. there was no resolution to what started as decent movie.

i love a good satire no matter what the subject is. (scary movie, epic movie, meet the spartans are not good satires)

also: death at a funeral, airplane, naked gun

Pulp Fiction v Reservoir Dogs over 3 years ago

i am not a tarantino fan although i think pulp fiction was atleast watchable. there is such a thing as too vulgar when it comes to a movie. when every sentence uses a cuss word then that word eventually looses the power it once had and becomes annoying to hear. that is one thing that turns me off of his films. also i think the last thing tarantino watched before making pulp fiction was the killers(1964). pulp fiction only wished it could be that good.

what should be first kurosawa movie? almost 3 years ago

I have yet to see one of his movies, but i want to fix that real soon since i can grab one at barnes and noble now for half off. I have read brief descriptions of most of his films and the three that seem to have the most interesting stories are: Roshamon, High and low, and Seven Samuri. Any suggestions for what is the most essential movie of his. thanks

what should be first kurosawa movie? almost 3 years ago

I started this thread and would like to thank everyone who responded with their suggestions. From feedback it appeared that i should go with Seven Samuri or Ikiru. High and Low which i was originally intersted in, hardly got a mention in this thread, and Yojimbo also sounds interesting now.

However my choices of Kurosawa at my local barnes and noble tonight were Roshomon, Stray Dog, High and Low, or Ikiru. So I went with Roshomon and i just finished watching it minutes ago. I thought it was brilliant, I loved the premise of different people involved in the same circumstances, but coming to different conclusions and retelling the events differently based on ones own prior experiences and agendas. more kurosawa movies will join my collection in the near future.

one other question though. i’m sure you might remember american cinema portraying the japanese in very unflattering ways during world war two (especially warner brothers and disney cartoons). Well, did kurosawa or other japanese directors do the same about Americans during the 1940’s and 1950’s? it doesn’t bother me one way or the other, but it would be an interesting piece of history if they did.

Worst Criterion DVDs almost 3 years ago

(spoilers) I just watched The Hit and was very dissapointed with the movie, and the release had no good features too. The movie started out with promise but the ending ruined it. During the wrestling match on the side of the road, Maggie should have shot him there, walked off and end off the movie. Instead it went further and them meeting in a random town next was unrealistic and stupid. Tim Roth shot in the eye was cool as hell though.

Rob Zombie's "Halloween" = My Worst Movie Of All Time almost 3 years ago

don’t care for remakes of an already well known, quality movie. Devil’s Rejects though was surprisingly very good. It wasn’t even a horror movie like it was advertised. it was more of a serial killer on the run movie, and the soundtrack fit the movie so well. House of a 100 Corpses was much worse than his version of Halloween though.
