I don't know about "tactics", but when i really started getting into world cinema in the late 80s it was through the book John Kobal's Top 100 Movies (with selections by various critics) so i set out to see as many as poss, and then the Time Out and Sight & Sound polls and so on. Now there are loads of polls and selections online, like They Shoot Pictures Don't They? site, Rosenbaum's 1000 and even my own Kenji's Canon, and recommendations here. There was also an interesting poll of mubi users, with resulting list by Polarisdib, and the films to see in our world cups and directors cups here.. So really i've spent too much time watching films!
