I support you Keagan in both of those. The novelty of Button was not enough to hold the movie together for me. Well made, aesthetically great, great acting, great score, but the story was poorly executed. It was too strange a story for Roth and Robin, and they blew it. I think Fincher saved their butts. It still sucked though.
But my intentions for this thread were – Irreversible. Gaspar Noe made a truly sick film, and I don’t care to ever endure that emotional torture again. And that is why I tip my hat to him.
The Wizard of Oz. I am originally from KS, so I should love this film right? I hate it. I know that it is a great film. I have read dozens of articles of its spectactular grandeur, its quintessential existence, its thematic importance, but I violently hate this film simply because I am an idiot. I have seen it once and refuse to have to sit through the painful viewing again. It hurts my eyes, ears, and brain.
But I will admit that this film has nearly single handedly put KS as the center of the Universe. You cannot escape the references to it in everyday life. It’s actually eerie. Pay attention.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army. 4/5. I hate to love Guillermo. And watching the bonus features (troll market walk through) elevated my current dilemma. He shows so much passion and points out insignificant details that matter to no one else, but are imperative to make the story absolutely real inside his head. I find his art direction to be repetitive throughout his films; homogenous, as some would call it.
Donnie Darko is intriguing. I actually praise Richard Kelly for his efforts to involve the audience beyond the two simple hours of the film, just like he did on Southland Tales with the comics. If you don’t want to read about a film and discover what the director/writer/anyone involved was thinking while painstakingly laboring over your enjoyment then you should stick to “Last Craption Hero” or “Wild Hogs”. In fact, why are you even here?
Donnie Darko isn’t a pseudo blah blah blah film. It’s a film that provokes questions. And any film that does that is a success to me. It was also beautifully made so all the better.
The best commentary by Kelly that I have ever seen is in front of the screenplay paperback – the DVD commentary is rather helpful as well.
If you think it’s really that confusing – remember “Primer”?
War, Inc. – 1/5
This film was hard to sit through. The themes were blatant and often times would reach from the screen and slap you in the face. I don’t understand why great actors would lower to such political waste.
Apocalypto. I was disappointed that Mel would work so hard for historical accuracy and blow it in the last moment of the film. A quick wrap up and an easy solution. Unless of course he cared nothing for the fabled ancient culture and created a dazzling story about the end of a man’s life (just because the explorers had interrupted and prolonged his capture from the blues doesn’t mean he was free from Europe’s white terror from upon the water).
The dominating cultures were long dead by the time Spanish dominance had stumbled upon the western shores; however understandable at the native’s awe as the mythical Quetzalcoatl walked again among them. If mel was going historical he was crapping out, if he was going fantastic, why not use the panther. We all wanted it.
I have to nominate any of the Die Hard flicks as a generic response. Anyone who is pissed will feel a little better. But a personal response would be either Dazed and Confused or porn. They always bring my spirits up.
I don’t have any titles, but I think it’s rather comical that the person who started the thread didn’t do their homework. The sad thing is there are too many threads on “Auteurs” that resemble general laziness in research, i.e. clone topics
It’s the “life immitates art” (or vice versa) effect that Andy “Narcissist” Warhol was so excited to film that compels the said writer/director to capture the details of intimate exchanges. I don’t find most of it necessary; however, it falls into the pornography category. Especially because homemade porn is king. Uploaded from a home computer. Make up a story about how much these two love eachother and there you have “10 Songs: A Sequel”.
The category non-simulated does not exist. It’s either softcore or hardcore. That is the question.
If someone does like “Friday Night Shitty Lights” they should be taken through the same process that cows are in the beef packing plants and packaged as spoiled meat. Is that a bit on the sociopath side for ya?
Don’t hate because you liked the shittiest movie ever. Reliving the glory days of Uncle Rico and Wooderson are ya? Let me guess…“Varsity Blues” was the pinnacle of cinema? Blow.
Here’s some more SACRILEGE for you guys to feast on. I’ve never understood King Kong and Ann’s relationship. Is it Stolkholm syndrome or the type of love a master has for a pet because if it’s the former or any other kind of love then it’s pretty creepy. Which brings me to my pick for worst line; Jack Black’s “Twas beauty killed the beast.” Does that not suggest the beastiality kind of love? I choose Jack Black because he initiates it like a grade schooler with a speaking part.
Maybe my view is skewed because of The Simpson’s portrayal of the said film, which was a thousand times better than Peter Jackson’s upheaval. I’m not discrediting the 1933 for being ground breaking, just a strange sexual tension between a giant ape and Ann.
Waltz with Bashir: 5/5 A spectacular and violent film that slowly unravels a terrifying realization. Oh it was so beautiful. It would receive a four had it not truly inspired me in several ways.
Film production school will teach you necessary skills in the physical aspects of making film. Knowledge is gained through intense study in film theory, but neither one can teach you talent. Some people have it and others do not. Film is appreciated by everyone, but not everyone can make a film; however, film school can catapult you into a career that is production or theory oriented.
I have a friend who discovered her talent as a videographer/producer on small time stuff, but makes a decent living. She made atrocious films and wrote even worse, but she loved filmmaking enough to find her niche. Hollywood is brutal. Even talent doesn’t promise success, but it can sure as hell help.
It won’t affect a damn thing. The movie was spectacularly layered. But I think it was made for the average, although you won’t see the success like The Dark Knight or Iron Man. It’s a massive project that cost over $140 million. People say it is a niche film, but no studio is going to toss the idea around for a decade and throw money at it like it’s going out of style for a small group of geeks. There are some compromises in the film, and it was cut from 3+ hours (can’t wait for the blu-ray) so that it can perform as a big box office draw, but not life changing. Unfortunately the reason is because of the average.
I wish it was a precursor. Simple in show, but complex in form. All the pieces that make a perfectly honed Swiss time piece are only discovered after you go digging.
