About Me

“Experience is not less than it was, it is too much more: our culture’s expanded consciousness (within) and amplified communication (without) overwhelm and enervate some artist and produce, finally, a bankruptcy, rather than a surfeit, because of a sense of incompetence to deal with that enlarged experience.”

Stuff I’ve been watching that isn’t in the MUBI database:

Zatoichi’s Vengeance (13) (Takuzo Tananka, 1966, 5/5)
Zatoichi’s Sword Cane (15) (Kimiyoshi Yasuda, 1967 4/5))
Massacre Time (Lucio Fulci, 1966 3/5)
Godzilla ’84 (Koji Hashimoto, 1984 3/5)
Zatoichi Challenged (17) (Kenji Misumi, 1967 4/5)

Captain America: The First Avenger

Dull, derivative, dreck. An extra star for Tommy Lee Jones and a couple of decent set pieces.

I actually just found an old VHS copy of *Camera Buff* for 50 cents at a thrift store, so I'm definitely going to be watching it soon.

Hey thanks for the follow. Speaking of *Gymkata*, did you ever see *Equilibrium*? It reminded me of *Gymkata* (which I've only seen the previews for)--except it combined martial arts and gun play. It was kinda absurd, if you ask me.

I did see Equilibrium, unfortunately. It was just terrible but provided none of the "good bad movie" enjoyment that Gymkata achieves. Kurt Wimmer should really not be allowed to have anything to do with films, in my humble opinion.

I don't know if I could stomach watching *Gymkata*. The fact that the filmmakers have to contrive a way to get make objects look like gymnastics equipment and get the villains close enough to them is sufficient hilarity for me, I think. :)

It's amazingly bad. Really there are only a couple scenes, both hilarious, where gymnastic equipment is fabricated. I would suggest, if you ever attempt it, to have a fair amount of alcohol or whatever other intoxicant you might enjoy.

We Need to Talk About Kevin. Still reeling that one. Intense. I'm finding it very interesting to try and decide which I prefer: that or Tree of Life. Kind of comes down to what mood you're in. Life-affirming vs exact opposite.

It's one of the films I am most looking forward to getting to eventually. I've heard almost nothing but positive feedback. The one dissenter was a friend of mine, and filmmaker, who said it will probably end up being the worst film he sees during the festival. This, of course, only intrigued me more.

Like it or hate it, what one cannot argue is that it is a very dense work from a true auteur.

It's from film critic Stanley Kauffmann. Unfortunately I can't seem to locate the notebook I originally copied it into and a quick flip through his books didn't help. I update if I find it. If you've not read any Kauffmann he's worth checking out, though I've found when I disagree with him, it's violently.
