Best Films of the 80's? over 3 years ago

I’d like to hear some feedback on what you the Criterion viewer thinks the “best” film of the 1980’s. In my opinion David Lynch’s 1986 “Blue Velvet” and Spike Lee’s 1989 “Do the Right Thing” top the list. Some other favorites would include: Scotts “Blade Runner”, Bergman’s “Fanny and Alexander”, Lee’s “Shes Gotta Have It” and Jarmusch’s “Stranger Than Paradise” and “Down By Law”. Let the debate start!

Best Film About Film? over 3 years ago

I’ve made up my mind Billy’s “Sunset Boulevard” is the best film about the film industry. Wait a sec…now that i think of it, Fellini’s “8 1/2” dives deeper into the depths of the subconscious through Fillini’s mastery of flashbacks and fantasy. Ah! I can’t decide, a simple flip of silver couldent possibly solve this quagmire. What say you? “Sunset” or “8 1/2”? Any other movies about the movies i have disregarded?

Eraserhead over 3 years ago

I dressed up as Henry Spencer for Halloween last year, and wouldent ya know? only one person knew who I was, funny cause he was the elephant man. I even had the little inchworm in a locket in my pocket. One of my fav Lynch films (tough to compile a top 5), this underrated classic even inspired Kubrick when shooting “The Shining”. Loved by cinephiles and hated by their girlfriends, “Eraserhead” set the tone for future Lynch classics.

What is so great about this movie? over 3 years ago

Two years ago I saw “Sweet Movie” and decided it was the most grotesque, over the top, surreal film I had ever seen. Then I saw Salo, and fell in love with it. Literally every person I have viewed it with (except one open-minded Cinephile) thought it to be simply vile and unworthy of public spectacle. Why? after all it is just a movie, moving art. Ok, ok, all shit eating and eye gouging aside, Pasolini masterfully depicts an allagorical portrait of post-fascist Italy through still shots worthy to be hung in The Metropolitan. Once opponents of this masterpiece see beyond the sadomizing surface and focus on it’s central message (see the last shot of the guards dancing), Salo will be celebrated as innovative and beautiful. In my opinion any Michael Bay film is FAR more offensive than Salo.

A Quick One While He's Away...... over 3 years ago

My favourite “Slacker” character changes quicker than my sex life. At this moment (7:17 pm 19 Jan 2009) It would be the anarchist man. I know it’s tough but…who/what group is yours?

Best Picture Oscar 2009 over 3 years ago

Acadamy- “Slumdog”. I would personally say “The Wrestler”, although Rourke will win best actor and Aronofsky best director.

Worshipping "The Ram" over 3 years ago

In my mind, which often wonders and temporarily shuts down, “The Wrestler” is not only the best film of 2008/9 but one of the most moving films I have viewed in a very, very long time. It may just be Mickey Rourke’s battered yet eerily sexxy physique or Marissa Tomei’s Van Gough-of-a-body, hell it just may be that sarcastic vermant that Randy (Robin) calls a boss. Nevertheless, “The Wrestler” is a near flawless film that only gets better after multiple viewings, i’m on my fourth day in a row**. I would appriciate feed back (positve or negative) of this Aronofsky instant classic and how it stacks up against some of its Oscar-worthy contemporaries.

**Maybe this is why I do not have a girlfriend

what's all this talk about Slumdog and The Wrestler?! WHAT ABOUT PAUL BLART GODDAMN IT!!! over 3 years ago

Kidding of course…… But seriously vent all of your frustration right now. It doesnt even have to be about shitty movies. Hide behind the shield of escapist virtual reality! Here I’ll start: When I go to Wendys I want more chicken in my salad damn it, and next time those vermants skimp my poultry i’m going to ask for more. Ah! that feels better! Now you try!

WHICH DIRECTORS...NOT...CURRENTLY REPRESENTED IN THE CRITERION COLLECTION DO YOU WANT TO SEE INCLUDED? over 3 years ago

First and foremost, David Lynch. Going down the line Coens, P.T., Tarentino, Boyle among others. just a side note, Jarmusch’s Dead Man is in desperate need of a criterion fix…

Memorable/Favorite Film Deaths about 3 years ago

A cynical topic perhaps, yet i think it would be interesting to see what you think are the greatest or most memorable “deaths” in cinema. For whatever reason the two that just came to my mind are Frank Booth getting shot in the head in “Blue Velvet” and Radio Raheem getting strangled in “Do The Right Thing”. What say you?
