I’d have to say that the next-to-final scene in Full metal Jacket, where the platoon is being cut down by a mysterious sniper and eventually they shoot the sniper, only to discover it was just a little girl… The little girl suffering in pain begs to be killed,… “Kill me” in a freakish whisper. That scene stayed with me for a whole week, i could not even sleep that night.
I’d choose would be Woody Allen’s ‘melinda & melinda’. When I heard about the concept of this film, i was excited at such a clever premise and thought it had the potential to be a truly great Woody Allen film. Unfortunately what i saw was very stilted dialogue that you couldn’t help but tell it was so obviously written. Needless to say, I was very dissapointed.
I was also intrigued by the film’s black character ( Played by the great chiwitel Ejofor)… a rarity for Woody Allen, at least a black character who has some depth.
This film had potential to be truly great given the juxtaposition of the tragedy and the comedy. I’d love to see Woody get another crack at this one.
The film is very Kafka-esque in the sense that the presumed protagonist is killed, the death of whom the film treats like one of an ancillary character.
P.S Hoffman, Bill murray, marion cotillard, Don cheadle, chiwetel ejiofor, Laura Linney, Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, kate winslet, Garcel Garcia Bernal, Peter O’ Toole, Audrey Trattou
What are some of your thoughts on this Polish director. Is he on his way to being a talented Auteur. I thought 2004’s my summer of love was a great adaptation of helen cross’s novel and one of the best portrayals of adolescence i have ever seen. Just want to know what everyone thinks about him. ‘Last Resort’ was underrated as well.
But if you haven’t seen my summer of love… I highly recommend it.
… or egotistical hack who makes self-indulgent meditations after obsessively watching the works of David Lynch and J. cassavetes… He’s actually somewhat talented, it just rubs me the wrong way in the sense that he adamantly denies any influence in his work.
well since no one is going to step up and say it… i think Scorsese is slightly overrated… Taxi Driver was a masterpiece, but i didn’t particularly care for Raging Bull or Goodfellas.
Also check out ’Dostoevsky’s Travels’ a sort-of a tragi-comic road movie with the only living descendant of the great Russian novelist – a St Petersburg tram driver – Dmitri Dostoevsky. The film follows his travels around Western Europe.
