Does anyone have any info as to how the sound was created in this movie? it seems to have been done in post as opposed to being diegetic and thus not tampered with. there were elements that i liked (the young woman racing through the grass sounded a bit like the noise the giant ants make in THEM!) but i just wonder why the sound they recorded on set wasn't adequate enough. presume it was to hoik preternatural tension

Durgnat wrote some articles briefly for MovieMail before his death just as i was doing stuff for their catalogue and newsletters, which felt like an honour cos he was among the best. I've not read the Psycho book, but the Renoir and W.R ones are great

Hey man No problem. Happy to oblige. I haven't had a chance to go through all your lists yet but from what I've seen most are tip-top and right up my alley, so to speak. We seem to have sort of a similar taste in movies, if you know what i mean ... you know, how we value the importance of mise en scene and form etc., and how a movie is presented, how we recive it and less so the plot and more just the images and sound. That's just the impression I get, sorry if i'm wrong :) I like Tony Rayns and have for a while now ever since I became aware of his ubiquitous presence on the Masters of Cinema DVDs - you know, the Mizoguchi films and his fab erudite introductions explaing the history of Mizo and Ugetsu or Sansho. I can't find it, but he made me realise in an article for Film Comment that Kim Ki-Duk is basically just a hack as well
