Great question. This is a really hard question to answer, however… One other possibility that just came to me, might be that; could it not just all a dream? Daniel is sleeping on the floor of the bowling alley, maybe he is simply dreaming that we was awoken by Eli? Also, the butler doesn’t seem to surprised when he walks in on Daniel at the end, maybe there really is no bleeding corpse in front of him? I’m just guessing like the rest of them. That would give a completely different spin on the ending. But I don’t know – I suppose we could speculate several reasons why he looks so young, but to be honest it didn’t really bother me. I love the movie. I think it’s one of the best movies produced in the last couple of years, if not more.
Mutual Appreciation is a great film. It really showcases how much can be done with basically nothing. Very inspirational for indie minded film makers. The IMDB boards are horrible. Always have been, always will be. There’s far to much negativity running through that site. I find myself puzzled every time I start reading the boards. It’s a waste of time.
As far as the Mumblecore question. I think that when a Mumblecore is done well, it can be very profound and powerful, but done wrong and it can be incredibly blan and boring. Personally, I find the genre rather inspirational, but I do realize that only so many Mumblecore films can be made before the genre runs out of steam.
I would actually have to say There Will Be Blood. The first time I saw it, I didn’t really realize what kind of a film I was in for. I saw it 6 times in theaters. Such a great flick. The soundtrack was engulfing. The performances were so grand… Well, you get the point.
I just want to send a: “thank you” to Lester Burnham for creating this discussion on such a great movie. I’m really happy with what I’ve heard you all say. I’ve gotta admit, I don’t know if American Beauty is really worthy of all the credit it gets. But at the same time, it’s such a simple and effective movie. It was done to perfection and its is a beautiful American film.
I wanna say thank you to Lester Burnam for starting such an interesting dialogue. Personally, I think that American Beauty is a fantastic American film, but it may not live up to all of it’s hype. But as a writer – I’ve gotta hand it to Alan Ball – and even Mendes — the ending is so simple and yet haunting. This movie sticks with you.
I always feel stupid when I dislike a movie that has been considered a masterpiece, ect. But I can’t lie — I really didn’t enjoy Synecdoche, New York. I didn’t care about any of the characters and the film failed to communicate with me in any way. But that’s just my opinion. And I do love Godard.
LA Confidential. My god that movie was a disappointment. It’s incredible how much support it has considering how average of a film it is. Terrible director.

The film has its downs — but there is something incredible inside of it as well. You’ve got to “sift through” the weaker bits.
