Am I the only one who liked Benjamin Button? over 3 years ago

I was quite dissapointed with the film, I love all of Finchers other work though. That might be the reason I was so let down, because I was expecting this to be his big epic masterpiece or something of that nature. I’d give it probably something like a 6 or 7 out of 10.

Revolutionary Road over 3 years ago

First off, I’m new here, so hello everybody! It’s nice to see a civilized group of people who can intelligently talk about films without having to attack others (ala IMDB). Anyways….

I’m thinking of going to see this one tonight, but I’ve heard such mixed reviews about it, just wondering for those of you who’ve seen it how you’d rate it. If for no other reason I would see it simply because it’s a Sam Mendes film, but when I saw the trailer I was genuinely excited about it. Since then however, I’ve heard mounds of awful reviews for the film citing it as a boring re-attempt at American Beauty etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

Why I didn't love Slumdog Millionaire. over 3 years ago

I agree, I thought the film was good but it’s incredibly overrated. It was one of those movies that I really wanted to love, but for some reason or another just left me unsatisfied. It wasn’t a BAD film by any means, just not as good as I had hoped.

Favorite Film From Each Genre? over 3 years ago

Action – Hard Boiled
Adventure – Into the Wild
Animation – A Scanner Darkly (If that counts) if not, then Akira.
Comedy – The life Aquatic
Crime/Gangster – this is a hard one, but if I had to pick just ONE, I guess it would be Goodfellas.
Cult Films – Pulp Fiction
Drama – Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) or maybe The Shawshank Redemption
Epics – Apocalypse Now (preferably the Redux)
Film Noir – The Third Man
Horror – 28 Days Later
Made for T.V. – Band of Brothers
Musicals –
Romance – Amelie
Sci-Fi – 2001: A Space Odyssey
Silent Films – Modern Times
Sports – Raging Bull
Thriller – Memento
War – The Thin Red Line
Westerns – tie between Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

WHICH MOVIES...PUT OUT IN LAST 5 YEARS...DO YOU THINK WILL ONE DAY JOIN THE CRITERION COLLECTION? over 3 years ago

Not all of my picks are in the last 5 years per say, but they are all fairly recent.

Chan-Wook Park’s “Revenge” Trilogy
The Lives of Others
There Will Be Blood
Akira
Memento
Leon
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind

I’m surprised at those of you saying Brick should get a criterion release. Not that it’s a bad film, I just don’t think it’s really worthy of criterion treatment.

The Last Metro over 3 years ago

This is one of the very few Truffaut films I haven’t seen, and since the criterion release comes out in april I’m thinking of just flat out buying it. For those of you who’ve seen it, just wondering how it ranks with Truffauts other films, because I pretty much love everything he’s done. I mostly just want opinions before I make up my mind for sure.

Thanks

Favorite Gary Oldman Role!! over 3 years ago

I thought he was fantastic in Leon, it was just so over the top. Believe it or not I also liked him in that short from the BMW films when he played the devil. The short was called “Beat The Devil” I believe.

Straight-Laced or Frogs Falling/Altman-on-Meth over 3 years ago

It’s hard to say, as I love all his films, but for this topic I think I’d pick the second category, as Magnolia and Boogie Nights are the films that got me into PTA in the first place.

KUBRICK'S INFLUENCE ON "THERE WILL BE BLOOD" over 3 years ago

When I first saw There Will Be Blood the very first thing I thought was “Man, this could have been a Kubrick film”. I agree with you in saying it’s a great style for PTA, however I do love all his previous films even with the “California Pop Atmosphere”.

Wes Anderson Imitators, the worst kind of directors/writers? about 3 years ago

I think the problem is really the fact people attempt to imitate whatever style it is that seems to be catching on at the given period in time. Right now there’s this whole slew of “indie” filmmakers trying to make these simple yet profound comedies that fail as a result of their self indulgence.

Wes Anderson breathed new life into his genre, but his imitators seem to drowning it once again.

And yes, I do agree, Tarantino imitators are the worst.

24 Hour Berlin DVD? over 2 years ago

Anyone know if it’s going to receive a DVD release? Because I’ve been watching it whenever I have spare time and I would honestly love to own a physical copy of it.
I apologize if this has already been answered or if it’s a stupid question, I did a search in the forums but couldn’t find a similar topic.

Thanks

Ink over 2 years ago

Yes, I just finished it and thought it was great. There was some fairly mediocre acting, and some of the sound design was extremely odd, but besides that I thought it was well made for a film of it’s budget ($250K I believe).

That is indeed a rather fantastic cover for for Eternal Sunshine. I would love a high res copy, if you have one available. Just let me know if you do, and we’ll find a means of transferring it.

Nobody has mentioned Hard Boiled, sure it’s out of print, but I’d say it still counts.
