About Me

celineanddavidgoboating.wordpress.com

Male. 21 years old. Living in Melbourne, Australia. Obsessed with films. Obsessed with listing. Somewhat unsurprisingly, considering the above, compiled a list of every film I’ve seen in the past five years (1014, as of 7/7/2010), ranked according to preference.

The funny thing is, I don’t have a specific fondness for one kind of cinema. I love Tarkovsky’s imagery; the Dardenne Brothers’ realism; Haneke’s intelligence; Rohmer’s simplicity; the dream logic of Svankmajer, Lynch and Bunuel; Rivette’s spontaneity; Bergman’s probing of human nature. The list could go on forever, but suffice it to say that many directors have helped foster a different kind of passion for cinema within me in their own individual ways.

Part of me wants to be a creative force like that, using cinema as my medium – but, for now, my goal is to become a film critic. Fortunately, as the Nouvelle Vague taught us, it may be possible to have the best of both worlds.

My favourite 50 films, in order:
1. Alice (1988)
2. Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974)
3. Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1959)
4. Eraserhead (1977)
5. Faust (1994)
6. The Mother and the Whore (1973)
7. Stalker (1979)
8. Perceval (1978)
9. Withnail & I (1987)
10. Alice in the Cities (1974)
11. Stranger than Paradise (1984)
12. Solaris (1972)
13. Persona (1966)
14. Blow Up (1966)

Just read your Toy Story 3 review. I am a fellow Pixar heretic, so it's good to know I'm not the only one who respects their technical abilities but finds the stories lacking.

What can be written about The Room that hasn’t already been said? In a sense, it’s a critic’s dream: a film that is so profoundly incompetent that no level of ridicule can be considered excessive…  read review
