There are many threads about the ‘10 Greatest Movies You’ve Ever Seen’, but what about the ten WORST? Post your top ten here. I’ll begin:
10. The Phantom Menace
For simply being so damn dissapointing.
9. The Garbage Pail Kids Movie
8. Mac and Me
Watch as tacky 80’s tripe gets taken to a whole new level. Both at least get points for being so damned (unintentionally) hilarious, though.
7. Dirty Dancing
The cinematic equivalent of oatmeal, lathered in molasses, syrup, glitter and some gaudy disco lights.
6. From Justin to Kelly
Like Dirty Dancing, but without the disco lights, and alot more glitter and much more artificial-ness.
5. Waterworld
Silly and pretentious. A complete disaster.
4. Battlefield Earth
The only thing that saves this from number one is, again, the unintentional hilarity.
3. The Postman
Even more silly and even more pretentious than that other Kevin Costner epic above. Ugghhh…“Kevin Costner epic”…cringes
2. Patch Adams
No movie can even come close to comparing to the fraudulent sappiness of this one. Turgid, unintelligent, babyish, whiny waste of images.
1. I Know Who Killed Me
I won’t even dignify this one with a comment. Oh, wait…
10. Body Double (1984)
9. Ran (1985)
8. The Elephant Man (1980)
7. Popeye (1980)
6. Kagemusha (1980)
5. And the Ship Sails On (1984)
4. Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
3. Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985)
2. The Age of the Earth (1980)
1. Berlin Alexanderplatz (1983)
10. Synecdoche, New York (2008)
9. Nashville (1975)
8. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
7. Pierrot le fou (1965)
6. Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974)
5. Sans soleil (1983)
4. Black God, White Devil (1964)
3. 8 1/2 (1963)
2. Out 1 (1971)
1. Week-End (1967)
Basically, post no more, no less than a top ten of your favorite directors.
Here’s mine:
10. Michelangelo Antonioni
9. Stan Brakhage
8. Jacques Rivette
7. Fritz Lang
6. Glauber Rocha
5. Carl Theodor Dreyer
4. Federico Fellini
3. Kenji Mizoguchi
2. Robert Bresson
1. Jean-Luc Godard
Out 1.
Black God, White Devil.
Celine and Julie Go Boating.
Nashville.
Synecdoche, New York.
Playtime (Tati, 1967).
The 47 Ronin.
Imitation of Life.
Vertigo (obviously).
Gertrud (Dreyer, 1964).
Our Hitler.
The Age of the Earth (Rocha, 1980).
Hi, Mom! (De Palma, 1970).
Dog Star Man/The Art of Vision.
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?.
The Naked Kiss.
Blood and Black Lace.
Titicut Follies.
Seven Women.
The Sorrow and the Pity.
Anything by Godard that isn’t on the Criterion already.
Same for Lang (especially his Indian Epic…Yes. Just YES.)
And, on a much more conventional note, Citizen Kane.
Well, I would put down all the movies I love that have rotten (59 percent or lower) rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but I’m just going to list ones that are widely panned.
Heaven’s Gate.
Southland Tales.
Mission to Mars.
Popeye (Altman).
Showgirls.
Mommie Dearest.
Miami VIce.
The Black Dahlia.
Renaldo & Clara.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Dune.
Gummo.
Wolf Creek.
Seven Women (kind of…some people really love this one.)
Here’s when it really gets into a matter of opinion.
There’s Michael Bay’s The Rock.
There’s Rob Reiner’s (I know, I know…but c’mon, North was awful!) When Harry Met Sally.
There’s Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
There’s George Lucas’ (Like I said, mastter of opinion) Star Wars.
Yep. I’m only 13 and in love with auteurs (both the theory and the site ^^).
And by the way, in case if you’ve realized I Am Cuba is actually from 1964, I added it in because it wasn’t released to North America until 1995. In fact, it was virtually unknown until ’95.
If Yes Man was in the hands of Charlie Kaufman. That bland ‘Liar, Liar’-do-over could’ve actually been witty, let alone good (which now seems to be becoming a taboo in the new filmmaking industry).
Hmm…Cuba Si…I know Chris Marker (of course), but not Cuba Si. I’ve seen four of his films (Statues Also Die, A Grin without a Cat, Sans soeil, La Jetee). I will try and track that one down.

What 2008 film deserves the Criterion treatment? about 3 years ago
Synecdoche, New York is the NOT most deserving for a Criterion of 2008.
It’s the most deserving of the 21st Century.
Speaking of the 21st Century and the Criterion, how come they haven’t given Mulholland Drive the treatment?
Anyhow, definitely Che, Let the Right One In, Hunger, and United Red Army should get releases, too.

How could such a great director make such a lousy movie? about 3 years ago
I thought Satyricon was a masterpiece, and actually one of Fellini’s best movies.
The same goes for Marnie.
I’m going for Altman’s MASH. Sorry guys, I just didn’t like it.
