Totally. Oh man “Companeros” is one of the more underrated spaghetti westerns ever. Tomas Milian does a good pseudo Che Guevara in it plus it’s got Franco Nero and a crazy Jack Palance. Good film.
A really amazing freeze frame sequence, and one that Scorsese and the rest of the other films that have modeled themselves after “Goodfellas” (“Trainspotting”, “Blow”, “Snatch”, “City of God”, most other post 1990 films that had gangster themes with voice-over narration and freeze-frames) probably got their style from, would be Kinji Fukasaku’s “Sympathy for the Underdog” and “Street Mobster”. I think it’s “Street Mobster” that had the crazy knife fight sequence in the beginning which, stylistically, was way ahead of its time. Fukasaku had sooo much steez in the 70’s.
Oh another good film that has some good freeze frames is Clu Gulager’s “A Day With The Boys”. It’s in the bonus features of David Gordon Green’s “George Washington”. There’s some good shots in there like with the shot all zoomed in to the kids, like a photograph, then it unfreezes and zooms out in slow-mo. Really amazing cinematography in that one. I think the ending with the sunset and the little kid walking freezes too.
