Whether fiction or documentary, I enjoy the sense of wonder and aesthetic experience cinema brings, whether it is musical, literary, or visual. I also enjoy the exposure to different cultures and languages— particularly English, French, and Japanese but also Russian, Indian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Hebrew, etc. — and being transported in time and place to experience life vicariously through films.

Movie ratings:
5 stars: Extraordinary. Sublime. If it has any flaws, they are forgiven.
4 stars: Excellent. Beautiful. A touch of je ne sais quoi.
3 stars: Satisfactory. Well made. Thoughtful or clever. Adequately balanced.
2 stars: I don’t dislike it but I think it would greatly improve with a different director, cinematographer, DP, script writer, or actor(s).
1 star: It’s not meaningful to me personally or maybe I don’t understand it yet.
I seem to like 1 out of every 4 films I watch and half of what I like really hit the spot so I consider myself to have been very lucky or well advised as far as film exposure goes.
