not too expensive for me, because they’re usually worth it. my favorite thing to do after i get my paycheck is walk across the street to barnes and noble and get a brand new criterion dvd. that is… before the economy was destroyed and my hours were cut in half!
when i was fourteen or so i decided to try and see every cult movie i could (not knowing how infinite they were at the time), and i saw begotten at the video store. it looked weird enough for me, so i rented it. it was so disturbing i couldn’t eat for two days.
it’s still one of my favorite movies, though i haven’t seen it since, because it’s so ingrained in my memory. that was 11 years ago!
i recently saw Days of Heaven for the first time, and i liked it a lot. there was something i noticed about it though, that i thought was interesting. there is not a single shot, scene, character, or line of dialogue in the film that is not COMPLETELY necessary. everything said and done does nothing except to propel the plot forward and explain why things are happening. except for ONE scene of the guy tap dancing on the two by four. and that’s only about a forty second scene. other than that the film is so concise it’s amazing. i know that about 95% of things happen in movies to keep the plot going, but this movie had NOTHING else at all. no scenes were there just for character development or anything. so there ends up being very few characters and very little dialogue, and it’s a pretty short movie, i think it’s just under an hour and a half. given the story and the scenery it could have easily been a two hour film.
i’m not saying this is good or bad, i’ve just never seen another movie that’s so… spare!
am i the only one that noticed this?
thank you so much for the reply! i thought i was just noticing something completely pointless! interesting stuff, it makes total sense now!
if i had gone with the criterion version, i guess i would have known that, and i normally would have but i found a generic copy used for $5 so i figured i couldn’t pass it up. thanks for the information!
i was disappointed by CHUNGKING EXPRESS. maybe if it had the third story included as wong originally intended, it would have wrapped things up a bit more. but it’s still enjoyable.
BATTLE OF ALGIERS is one of the best films i’ve ever seen.
i really like crispin glover. while he’s not in that many good films, he seems to be really smart and creative and funny in an offbeat way, judging from his interviews and live show.
and his album from the 80s or whatever is rad
i have micheal on dvd by Kino, and it’s not that entertaining, but if you can find it used for a few dollars, the commentary is worth it if you’re really into dreyer
i’ve noticed that a large amount of my favorite movies are by directors that are working with their favorite actors. it seems like the actors understand what the director wants in a way that makes them fit right in to these fictional worlds that the director creates
i’m glad someone said this. i LOVE kino and check up on their website all the time to see what they’re coming out with. i love silent films and they put a lot ogf care into them.
if you like silent movies, kino is the way to go!
check out DIARY OF A LOST GIRL by pabst, starring louise brooks
it seems to me that most of my favorite movies involve a director that wrote the screenplay him/her self. for example david cronenberg, david lynch, sofia coppolla, stanley kubrick, todd haynes. i feel it makes the films more personal/unique. does anyone else notice this?
i noticed that someone else mentioned this movie in films that Criterion should release. this is one of my favorite movies of all time, and supposedly Orson Welles’ favorite. yet there is NO decent copy of the dvd available. i personally have two different copies of it, and they’re both total crap quality. my main complaint is the audio is not synchonized with the visual at all.
i never hear welles fans mention this movie, or anybody else for that matter. why is that? i think it’s brilliant. it’s scary, funny, creepy, perverse, basically everything i love in film! and how can you go wrong with kafka?
guess my question is, why does this movie get no respect, and when will it get a decent dvd release?
i read this in the news recently, but no one i’ve talked to seems to know about it. the missing footage from metropolis that’s been missing for 80 years has BEEN DISCOVERED! in argentina i believe. so now the whole film is available. i’m wondering if anyone knows how long it will be till it’s been restored and put together as a whole film and available to the public??
imagine what other incomplete films could be found in our lifetimes… unfortunately i don’t think their is any hope for greed or the magnificent ambersons
i saw this when it first came out, so i must have been about 16. that’s around the time i first started to see film as art instead of just a story, i remember being very impressed by the cinematography. and jenniifer tilly is fucking hot.
personally, i got rid of all my vhs and moved on to dvd pretty quickly. but there are a few movies that seem to be impossible to get on dvd. for me there are three that i would love to have on dvd
-begotten
-marquis
-wax, or the discovery of television among the bees
i know begotten is out there but it’s running at over $100 used!

WHAT IS YOUR PICK FOR THE WORSE MOVIE EVER MADE? over 4 years ago
worst big budget- TITANIC
worst low budget- ZOMBIE 4: A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD
p.s. for some reason most horrible movies tend to be sci fi or horror. and i love horror movies, but it’s true

i would say DIRTY DANCING except i’m not guilty about it at all. the screenplay is flawless in an 80s way and the soundtrack kicks ass
ps to the people who listed RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE THING- what the hell? these are great movies! they shouldn’t be guilty pleasures at all
