About Me

My Film Blog: Aesthetics Of The Mind

I have a BA in Philosophy and Film Studies from the University of British Columbia. I’m currently based in Toronto, completing my Masters in Cinema Studies at Innis College/the University Of Toronto. I work for the University as a Teaching Assistant, Researcher, and Cinema Studies Representative of the Grad Students Union.

I love music and film, and am particularly intrigued by the (seemingly) inextricable connection between form and aesthetic experience. As a (self-described) phenomenologist – who’s perspective can be most accurately likened to that of Aldous Huxley – I believe that perception is the key to understanding film, and that the experiencing of film is more valuable than films themselves.

Brilliant man. I'm currently at a conference at Harvard where his films are being shown. He did the Keynote Address, and I spoke with him at length both yesterday and tonight at dinner. Kind of a new hero to me. Can't wait to read my signed copy of Devotional Cinema

Thank you. I appreciate that. Odd that the link didn't work for you, since the link you've pasted in your comment works for me. Here's a link to my site where you can find it (There's a clickable link at the top of my profile here too!): http://aestheticsofthemind.wordpress.com/

Found it, nice little site you have there. I like your take on it.... two things, for me it's a rape, even though she clings submissively at one point (all the more tragic) and also I read the end as suicide, although the door is left slightly open. Regardless, what a film! cheers, MR

PS: If you like Tarkovsky — and maybe you know this — watch Shinji Aoyama's Eureka. It's a long film but worth the three or four hours.

Sweet, thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out.

Actually, I never watched Stalker, not because I didn't want to, I tried twice and they were bad copies, or had such bad subtitling that I gave up. I'd like to enjoy it 'properly'. Thanks for the comment! :)

I know what you mean. A film like that deserves to be seen 'properly'. I fortunately got to see it just last week in 35 mm — an imported print they played in Vancouver. I had seen the film 3 or 4 times previously — not to mention the odd scene I watch over and over and over again — but no amount of times could equal the grandeur of seeing it on the big screen in 35.

oh I'm jealous I must say. The only thing close to that, that I saw on 35mm was Roma and Satiricon. And the 70mm format of Kubrick's 2001. But Tarkovsky must be well worth it!

On first impression, and for good reason, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive (2011) reminded me of Melville’s Le Samourai (1967), with Ryan Gosling, the driver, sporting a similar role to Jef Costello, Alain…  read review

Tree of Life is a brilliant piece of art that the world is not yet ready for. While its narrative bears striking similarities to other “art-house” films – most notably Tarkovsky’s Mirror, which meditates…  read review

I’m not sure whether to consider this a film or television series; technically, it’s a television mini-series – 10 one hour episodes – but, because of it’s cinematic aesthetic and scope, it has been…  read review

Honestly, I don’t find this film difficult to understand. It’s not ambiguous, I think it’s quite clear what Bergman is saying. Of course, I may be wrong,
