Best Director: 1986 - KUROSAWA OR STONE? about 3 years ago

First of all,Kurosawa was nominated for best director 1986,so he lose the Oscar by Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa.I think it’s ridiculous to discuss who of them is better director. And of course Kurosawa is also better than Stone.
But it seems that people in this topic don’t understand the why the Academy decides.I will give some examples:
Federico Fellini:1961-He lost the Oscar for Dolce Vita. The winners were Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for West Side Story.
1963-Nominated for best director with 81/2.Winner was Tony Richardson for Tom Jones(oh mfg)
Ingmar Bergman:1974-Nominated for best director with Cries and Whispers.Winner was George Roy Hill for the Sting.
1976-Nominated for best director for Face to Face.Winner was John G.Avildsen for Rocky.(This year,Scorsese was not even nominated for Taxi-Driver).
1984-Nominated for Fanny och Alexander.Winner was James L. Brooks for Terms of Endearment(The members of the Academy should have been executed for this).
All these 82 years,a foreign-language film has never won Best Director. So I will find it typical of them to give an Oscar to Stone instead of Kurosawa.Ok,they maybe want to promote american films.
BUT,the MOST RIDICULOUS is that not even the best directors that worked in America have ever won Oscars.Alfred Hitchcock,Stanley Kubrick,Orson Welles(and others, but these are the most important),have never won an Oscar.I have no further comments to make.

If you owned only 1 film - regardless of the format - what would you pick? Why? about 3 years ago

Goodfellas, for sure.It is the film I enjoy the most.I can watch a thousand of times and right after I ‘ll want to watch it again. It’s probably not the best film I’ve seen, but surely the most enjoyable.

Slumdog Millionaire Overrated Film of the Year about 3 years ago

I saw it three days ago in the theater and I like.It is beatiful and entertaining.
But,does it worth the hype?No way.I can’t find a good reason why both audience and critics are impressed by this film.I don’t think it is a memorable,or a great film. And I agree with Bob,it will be forgotten soon. And that this movie won 8 Oscars, doesn’t mean anything. We all know that there are so many Oscar-winning films that have nothing to do with real cinema.
And,in conclusion I have a question for everybody.I don’t want to be pessimistic, but giving so much attention to this film doesn’t mean anything about cinema nowadays?Maybe we all discuss about this film, because there aren’t many good films to discuss about.

Foreign Laguage Films: Subtitles or Overdubbing almost 3 years ago

Subtitles of course.Dubbing is really ridiculous.I can’t believe that there are countries(like Germany or Russia)where all the movies are dubbed. Can anyone imagine a classic film-noir in Greek, for example? It would ruin the whole feeling of the film.Dubbing can also destroy the performance of an actor, because there are great performances that depends a lot on the way of talking.De Niro spent 6 months in order to learn to talk the Sicilian way in Godfather 2.Can anyone imagine this being dubbed?
Fortunately, here in Greece all the films in cinema(except the ones for children)are with subtitles, not dubbed.I feel really lucky for this.

Favorite Books almost 3 years ago

I really love Nikos Kazantzakis(being a Greek is probably one of the reasons, because I can read his books from the prototype). My favorites are “Zorbas the Greek”(maybe my favorite book),Christ Recrucified and The Last Temptation of Christ.I think that Kazantzakis is the most famous Greek author abroad(apart from the ancient ones like Homer). His books are a real treasure and I think that everyone should read at least the three I mentioned.
Other favorite books:
The Count of Monte Cristo(Alexandre Doumas)
Crime and Punishment(Fyodor Dostoevsky)
The Trial(Franz Kafka)-By the way,is Orson Welles’ movie,based on this book,worth watching??
The Lord of the Rings(J.R.Tolkien)
The Player(Fyodor Dostoevsky)
The Alchemist(Paulo Coehlo)
and many others…

Is "Bullit" worhwhile enough to stay asleep? almost 3 years ago

Tonight in TV there’s a screening of “Bullit”(1968,Peter Yates, with Steve McQueen). In the TV programm review says a load of great tihngs about this movie and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. The problem is that the movie starts at 2:45 in the morning, and I’m a little tired. Is this movie really so good,in order to stay awake and see it??

Josh S.,that you say about the ending is really interesting.Because(I don’t know if you are aware of that),Kafka has never ended his book.He has just left some notes, something that I found very intriguing in the book.I’m really curious to see what has Orson done in the end.And also if he could create the great atomsphere of this Kafka’s book.

Yeah, but if I’m going to see the movie,I will sleep around 5;00 in the morning.I think there’s a little difference…
By the way,I’m really mad about this f****n channel. They show all the great old films(for example The Exorcist,Bonnie and Clyde)at 2:00 in the morning and later and earlier they have only stupid, typical garbage American films.Ahh…

Surely “Crime and Punishment” is the best book to begin with. You can’t say it is accesible of course, but I think that is the perfect door to Dostoevsky’s work.I can’t say the same about “Notes from the Underground”.It was the first Dostoevsky I had read and I had found it strange and difficult(of course maybe that’s because I was 14 or 15 the first time I read it). After having read some other of his books,I came back to “Notes from the Underground” and I appreciated much more.

Favourite Music Moments in Movies almost 3 years ago

I love the Goodfellas’ soundtrack,it is great and surely one of the reasons “Goodfellas” is my favorite movie. The ones that I love more is “Rags to Riches”,during the opening titles, the great piano version of “Layla” and…I really can’t choose one song above the others.
The different theme for each main character in Once Upon a Time in the West, especially “Jill’s Theme”
The main theme in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which is played with a different instrument for each of the three characters
“Deborrah’s Theme” in Once Upon a Time in America
“California Dreamin” in Chungking Express
“Yumeji’s Theme” during the magnificent slow-motion scenes in In the Mood for Love
“Be My Baby” in Mean Streets
All the great songs of Simon & Garfukel in The Graduate
The first time Sam plays “As Time Goes By” in Casablanca
The opening scene in Fanny and Alexander, when Alexander is alone in the house
Also, maybe my favorite score is Nino Rota’s for The Godfather
and many others that I maybe forget right now

can you name a truly great american film in the last 5 years... over 2 years ago

“Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”,without a doubt. For me it is a true masterpiece, far better than “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood”,both of which are very good films too.“The Dark Knight”,“The Wrestler”,“The Departed”,“Million Dollar Baby” are all great films too,but “Assasination..” is the only masterpiece.
By the way,I haven’t seen “Synechdoche,New York” yet, which seems to be a favorite among many people in this site.I wonder if this one could make it for american films.

Best Bergman Film to Start Out With over 2 years ago

First of all,“The Seventh Seal” was the first Bergman I saw,and I love it immediately. It stayed as my favorite Bergman for a long time.If things were different,“The Sevent Seal” would be the one I will suggest to see first, not only because it was a great introduction to Bergman’s work for me,but also because it is one of his most accesible and trademark films.
Now that “The Seventh Seal” didn’t work for you,I have to make a different suggestion.Another one that could work as an introduction is “The Virgin Spring”,which is also a straightforward film, but I think it has things in common with “The Seventh Seal”,so maybe it’s not appropriate for you.So I came to the conclusion that the one for you is “Wild Strawberries”.Not that realistic,it features some dream sequences and many flashbacks(I really love the sense of time in this film),but it is a sweet film(of course,“sweet” may not be the right work for a Bergman film…) and not to hard to follow. That’s why I wouldn’t suggest “Persona”.Although “Pesona” is possibly my favorite and,in my opinion, his “magnum opus”,it’s no way the film to start with.I think it is a little bit confusing and much of a trippy film.If you were confused with “The Seventh Seal”,this one will blow your mind out, really.
So,apart from “Wild Strawberries”,my suggestions is “Fanny and Alexander”.Also I suggest you to stay away from the “Faith Trilogy” for now.

Stalker 1-Through a Glass Darkly 0
As much as I love Bergman,I have to say that this one was an easy decision.Stalker is surely my favorite Tarkovsky and one of my very favotrite films in general. For me Stalker is so close to perfection as a film can be.A great story, with such a philosophical and psycholigal depth, presented through images of breathtaking beaty.I can’t remember of another film that had really haunted me in that way.The mezmerising atmosphere give me the feeling I was dreaming. On the other hand,Through a Glass Darkly is a great movie.Harriet Anderson gives one of the best female performances ever on the screen. Most of the issues and problematics, that Bergman has deal with in his films, are here. But Stalker just stands on a completely different levels. If it was against one of my favorite Bergman, thing may be different. But now there has never been a dilemma for me.

WORLD CUP: VOTING- CHINA V POLAND (GROUP 8) over 2 years ago

To Live (1)-Tango(0)

I enjoyed Tango. It is really weird, but interesting and beatiful. But To Live is undoubtely a great movie. It is a moving family drama, although one could say that it is a bit melodramatic at moments, and also a critisim for China’s Communist Regime and Mao’s politics.Above all, though, the movie shows the strength of man, which overwhelms all difficulties and find the power to conitnue to live.

Chungking Express (1)-Kanal (0)

On the one hand,we have Wong Kar Wai’s beatiful tale about lost loves.Although I don’t consider this one as Kai’s masterpiece(In the Mood for Love and 2046 are the contests for this title),it is surely his breaktrough film and one of the most important and influential films of the 90s.Magnificent cinematography, the beaty of its images, great performances of an all-star Chinese cast and “California Dreamin” made me love this movie. On the other hand,we have Wajda’s war drama.I couldn’t refuse his quantities, but it don’t work very good for me.Ok,the black-and-white cinematography is great and the direction really sets a chlistophobic atmosphere. But I found the performances a bit weak and I believe that the movie hasn’t age very well.
