Vincent Gallo... Auteur? over 3 years ago

interesting guy. egotistical assholes usually are the best artists. that said don’t think buffalo 66 is all that great and haven’t seen the brown bunny. but just because you make shitty films doesn’t mean you are not an auteur if your personality and style is in those movies. it just makes you a shitty auteur. see also Harmony Korine.

Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection over 3 years ago

has The Wind (victor sjostrom) been mentioned? thats my #1 pick. also La Hora De Los Hornos and Antonio Das Mortes.
The Green Wall as well. I wish more latin american movies in general were available on DVD.

WISE BLOOD on CRITERION! over 3 years ago

i’m excited bout this. prefer Fat City for his 70s stuff but this one is a close second fave. The Dead would be nice to have on DVD too. The man should have his own box set.

Begotten over 3 years ago

saw this back in high school and didn’t think much of it. pretty boring from what i remember but its something i would like to see again to see what i would think of it now.

has anyone seen Death Powder? much more weird and incomprehensive than Tetsuo and just as good. very nightmare-ish. recommended for cyberpunk gross out fans.

just watched godfather II over 3 years ago

definetely an overrated series. however they are well made movies with a great storyline, classic scenes and great performances. i can understand not liking them, but to say they’re bad is ridiculous.

How important to you is the acting in a film? Can it take precedence over the contribution of the director? over 3 years ago

it can, but not usually. there are some actors who are great in bad/mediocre films yet make the movie better. Harry Dean Stanton comes to mind in this regard.

with that said acting is only one part of the film itself. other elements can compensate for bad acting, and vice versa.

Point Break vs The Last Boy Scout over 3 years ago

better early 90s action movie.

i pick The Last Boy Scout. brilliant opening scene. brilliant one liners. all the cliches and macho-isms of 80s 90s action movies put into one package. self referential without being a total parody of the genre unlike say The Last Action Hero. plus the scene where Bruce Willis shoves the guys nose up his brain after asking for a cigarette stands out as one of the greatest in cinema.

i love Point Break as well. but The Last Boy Scout is just so perfect in so many ways.

Point Break vs The Last Boy Scout over 3 years ago

I completely agree with your interpretation above and do think Kathryn Bigelow is a better director than Tony Scott.
however, The Last Boy Scout has a Super Dave reference so it is clearly the better movie.
