Memento

One of the best films of the past decade. A couple responses to some criticism: Calling the structure a "gimmick" is, whether you like the film or not, incorrect. A gimmick is something that's only purpose is to draw attention to itself. It has no artistic merit. While the structure Nolan employs in Memento is certainly attention grabbing, it also serves the all-important function of putting the viewer in the shoes of the protagonist. That's not a gimmick, that just excellent use of the medium to connect with the audience and elaborate on theme. Furthermore, to complain that the film wouldn't be as good in order is ridiculous. Of course it wouldn't be as good in order! It wasn't meant to be seen in order. The entire effect and impact of the film hinges on the fact that it isn't in order. That's like saying 2001 wouldn't be as good without the space scenes. Or roller coasters wouldn't be as fun if they didn't go up and down. Silly…

Christopher Nolan

Nolan reminds me of Hitchcock in that he makes smart films for a wide audience. Call it the "highest common denominator."

1. As someone with a deep respect for source material, how do you find a balance between the original work you are adapting and your own artistic perspective? Have you ever found yourself deferring to the source on principle? 2. What is the most difficult aspect or writing original material. How do you work past it? 3. Who would win in a fight between Mark Wahlberg and Christopher Lee? 4. Is it secret? 5. Is it safe? 6. Can I have a job?
