What films have you walked out on and why ? about 3 years ago

roy andersson’s Songs from the Second Floor. I think it was at Ansmellika. I vaguely recall Hoberman writing a review comparing it to Kubrick so I booked it to Houston st. and popped in. I think i left about 4 mins before it was supposed to end. If memory serves me right there was non stop vomiting at the end or some similar disgusting thing. I ‘d gotten the idea, and i am averse to witnessing vomit on film or video. If you know me please provide notice whenever necessary. I also tend to run out and run back in to miss vomit scenes i’ve recalled from previous viewings: Couple yrs ago at Moving Image: i recalled one in Wiseman’s Hospital and with the help of others who’d seen it more recently i was able to run out moments before it started and return right after it ended. I also used to get heads up opening weekend. The day starship troopers opened i got a lot of calls. totally aced that run out /return as well. And a couple summers ago, at Anthology, i left Clarke’s The Connection early. i’d seen it several times before and just popped in for distraction. I actually got a text during the film that my Grandmother just died. so then i left.

i hate i’m not there so much that I don’t even care to describe the reasons. It is a tripe piece of crap that is embarrassing to watch. Todd majored in Semiotics at Brown, and i saw him speak and give an advanced screening of Safe when i was at NYU. he’s a smart guy. i think safe is a great film too, but velvet goldmine is the one film of his where the tone of affect and dandyism and self consciousness is just perfectly, seemlessly executed.
I’m not There was an embarassment. I almost walked out three times over.
and Marq-in terms of your comments- i forfeit the drinking contest because i don’t drink. That said, i’m confident that if i still drank i would kick your ass. Not that i would want to, i’ve never played a drinking contest, as they are retarded and primarily reserved for either lame people or sick people. If you’re sick, it’s not your fault-aa.org or na.org can help.

favorite short film. almost 3 years ago

i saw someone wrote ‘night and fog’ (nuit et brouillard) but that is actually a feature, and also one of the best films ever. Mine would be les statues meurent aussi, toute la memoire du monde, almost any Warhol, and Marker and Pollet in the 60s.

yes Kenji, it is fair. I stand by my comment because Nuit et brouillard is sacred and transcends discussions of category or of length. I have seen this film countless times and my immediate reaction was that it was closer to 50 minutes, a testament to the unique status that Resnais’ film should have for us all.

Is Walter Hill the most under rated director of the 1970s? almost 3 years ago

you all forgot to mention BREWSTER’S MILLIONS. Not to mention some creative input we can guess was exerted over Alien and its sequels. But seriously, kids, revisit Brewster’s Millions. Your welcome.

re: my own post that read:

Vollman’s The Royal Family- Carlos Reygadas

Nabokov’s Pale Fire- Vincent Gallo

Drew Barrymore’s Little Girl Lost- Abel Ferrara

i’ll edit it to suggest Ferrara for all 3, and also Larry Clark for number 1 or 3. And while we are at it, Garrel for a Vollman or for something even more literal and straightforward, like JUNKY

The Polanski Debate over 2 years ago

i agree w/ this:
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/movies/2009/09/polanski-redux.html#entry-more

he’s rehabilitated…he raped this girl soon after his own wife (quite pregnant with his baby) was murdered by the Mansons.. and .he contributes massively to the betterment of the Film world .
