Last Time Best Picture Oscar Winner was a Masterpiece? over 3 years ago

Masterpiece (or chef d’œuvre) in modern usage refers to a creation that has been given much critical praise, especially one that is considered the greatest work of a person’s career or to a work of outstanding creativity, skill or workmanship.
Originally, the term masterpiece referred to a piece of work produced by an apprentice or journeyman aspiring to become a master craftsman in the old European guild system. His fitness to qualify for guild membership was judged partially by the Masterpiece, and if he was successful, it was retained by the guild. Great care was therefore taken to produce a fine piece in whatever the craft was, whether confectionery, painting, goldsmithing, knifemaking, or many other trades. The Royal Academy in London is one institution that has acquired a fine collection of “Diploma works” as a condition of acceptance.
It probably derives from the Dutch “meesterstuk” (German: Meisterstück), and the form “masterstik” is recorded in English in 1579 (or in Scots, since this was from some Aberdeen guild regulations), whereas “masterpiece” is first found in 1605, already outside a guild context, in a Ben Jonson play1.
Nowadays it is used for an exceptionally good piece of creative work2 or the best piece of work of a particular artist or craftsman3.

It would be Unforgiven for me. Perfect in every way. Good story.

Worst Criterion DVDs about 3 years ago

Days of Heaven … hehehe I was stuck, trying to figure how much of a difference there was to this release and comparing it to the initial dvd on Paramount that i actually had both out watching the movie, pausing it, putting in the other copy. i can honestly find very little difference. I was let down big time on this release

Naked City. Not amongst Dassin finest or even amongst the noir genre. It spawn a television series and that nice and dandy quote “There are eight million stories in the city…”

hahha on that note, r we seeing a Badlands release some time in the future?

Ang Lee – Eat Drink Man Women

Before he cross over to America, he made this beauty of a film. Hints of Ozu in it. Anyone not familiar with modern Asian cinema drama, should watch this film. You will find a bit of cooking, three women living different lives and one father trying to come to terms with their maturity and also his own aging.

IS "BENJAMIN BUTTON" WORTHY OF BEING IN THE COLLECTION? about 3 years ago

Only time will tell. But it does prove that David Fincher can do period movies. I think it’s as important as Danny Boyle doing Slumdog Millionaire. You may not love the movie but it will give the director more work.

Most Underrated Directors Working Today? about 3 years ago

Lynn Ramsay – She has the ability to weave a story and also give the audience some of the best visuals. Move Over Wong Kar Wai.

Michael Winterbottom – Code 46, Welcome Home Sarajevo, 24 Hour Party People, Mighty Heart. He Is ready to blow up big time. Just needs his Slumdog Millionaire.

Spike Lee – Like all New York Directors, there seems to be a story with their ups and downs struggle to find that next Masterpiece and an audience. 6 years ago, i was ready to count out Woody Allen that he will never again enjoy the sucess that he had enjoy in the early 1970s. Since Bamboozled, Spike has done descent films but nothing really extraordinaire. I am hoping he has something that will put his name back on the map.

Lost in Translation – See above

Sam Mendes – Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, Road To Perdition. Best director to show America for all its good and bad

Terrence Malick – New World – i am just a Malick fan. I great retold of a classic story.

Ken Burns History of Jazz – I recommend everyone should watch this documentary at least once in your life and you don’t even have to be a jazz fan. Some of the most moving moments and the best stories i have seen were from this documentary.

Favorite Novel of Yours which is dying to made into Film about 3 years ago

well back in the 1980s they made this lacklustre version of Less Than Zero with Robert Downey Jr as the lead. I like them to make another version of this Bret Easton Ellis novel. Since everything in music and fashion right now has the feel of 1980s. I am surprise they havent decided to give it a second stab. For heaven sake, their doing Batman again.
