What Music Video Collections and TV Shows Should Be On Criterion almost 3 years ago

Hm, I don’t think ‘Pushing Daisies’ is Criterion material but I am going to miss it!

@neh I second Hot Rod. I quote this film on a daily basis. “Hospital?” “Trashcan!” Anyway…

I’d like to see Un homme qui dort (The Man who Sleeps) on Criterion and theauteurs. It’s my all-time favorite! After Hot Rod and The Karate Kid pts. I & II, of course. Part III can just suck it.

I’m happy with the Spirited Away DVD that’s already out there.

Mindfuck Films almost 3 years ago

The Machinist?

I see ‘Cube’ on that list. How about Vincenzo Natali’s ‘Nothing’? It’s mindfuckery of the comedic sort.

Films you quote like it's your job almost 3 years ago

“You’re killing me, Smalls!”

“Button, button, who’s got the button?”

Odile: “Are there lions in Brazil?”
Franz: “As well as croc…Odiles.”

And I can quote Hot Rod and Heavy Weights from beginning to end. Cinematic masterpieces!

Assassination Of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford almost 3 years ago

I’ve seen it a couple times. It is just stunning! Love the soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis as well.

What was the first Criterion movie you watched? almost 3 years ago

The Royal Tenenbaums was the first that I purchased. I’m not sure if it was the first I had ever seen. I remember spending hours in Virgin Megastore trying to choose between Tenenbaums and Rushmore. I should have gone with the latter :P I mean, I already knew that I loved it. I hadn’t seen Tenenbaums yet. I dropped $50 on a blind buy!

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Kind of silly but it’s my favorite! With a tagline like “don’t get chumpatized!” you know it must be grand.

Foreign films for beginners almost 3 years ago

My parents’ biggest qualm with foreign films is having to read subtitles, but if the content interests them then I don’t think they mind. My dad’s really into heist-y detective movies and I recently recommended he see Rififi and Melville’s Le Cercle Rouge and Un Flic. They’re apparently filming a Red Circle remake starring Liam Neeson and Orlando Bloom right now. My mom’s into horror and Hellboy and she loved Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone and The Orphanage when I made her watch them with me. Neither of my parents had seen any foreign films before these.

I’ll second Children of Paradise (“France’s answer to Gone with the Wind” but better, imo) and Grand Illusion. I dunno about Jeunet though. Might be a bit visually overwhelming at first. If you think your parents would like Terry Gilliam’s work, then go ahead with Jeunet.

I tell everyone it’s what I imagine a ‘Firefly’ musical directed by John Waters would be like.

Battlestar Galactica almost 3 years ago

I won’t say much because I’m trying not to think about it but I’m excited/terribly sad. I don’t want to know what “entirely selfless act” (gulp) Gaius Baltar is going to perform. He’s been my favorite these past five years.

I can’t wait to see how the dream in the opera house comes into play.

Se7en Criterion Collection set? almost 3 years ago

I don’t know why you all live and die by Criterion. Se7en’s in the New Line Platinum Series, which is just as great imo. I own it and Boogie Nights. Their packaging is pretty neat; I prefer it to Criterion’s.

The Vista Series has some fantastic DVDs too.

Help make The Auteurs totally awesome almost 3 years ago

I’d like to be able to search for users who have favorite auteurs in common with me just by clicking their names on my profile and to be able to edit/delete a post I make anywhere at any time and not just for an hour or so after I’ve posted it would be nice.

P.S. Love the site! So glad I joined.

Best position to watch a movie almost 3 years ago

Lying on my stomach with a pillow under my chin, eyes on the laptop, arms dangling over the side of the bed, a cat keeping my feet warm… is this TMI? Right now I look like a bored eight-year-old girl on time out, but I’m really riveted by what I’m watching. It just wouldn’t appear that way to anyone else.

@Kenji One of mine as well! I like to “cap” (take screenshots of) movies when I’m bored. It’s therapeutic for me. Like being in the photo lab. P.S. I’m happy to have finally found another user with the Totoro display image! Major kudos.
