I'm a step closer to beginning to understand what all the fuss is with Renoir. Thanks for that comment.
I came in expected a cheesy horror 80s flick, but it was actually a good story! You almost have sympathy for Billy aka Santa Claus because of the fucked up childhood he had. Some nice bloody kills and plenty of tits make this fun for the whole family during the Occultic Holiday season where kids everywhere will sit on Satan's Claws ooops I mean Santa Clause's lap! Watch it now with your loved ones!
What an adventure! Beautiful set pieces, funny music, and original characters (De Niro was awesome!) You can tell Tim Burton and others were influenced by this movie. Listen to Terry Gilliam's audio commentary. Very likeable personality and great insight. The Extras on the Criterion let us in on how Brazil was made. In the end it's all about the Artist vs The Studio execs. Great Cult film!
I agree with the rest of you mubi heads. Watch it for the stunning cinematography not the story/acting/dialogue. The Criterion has no EXTRAS whatsoever so you're best off downloading it and pretending to be a movie critic and giving it a rating here on mubi. Forest fire scenes are beautiful, and the scene where the guy was sleeping while floating on a sheet of ice was really cool to see. Check it out!
Krzysztof Kieślowski said himself he doesn't believe in the "Power of Film" then what the hell did I feel when I watched all 10 episodes with the span of a month? Was it God Himself talking to me? Was it the Creator? Supreme Being? Was it me relating to the pains of other Human beings? Please watch this series you'll have deep philosophical debates with your friends/family. I loved the subtle piano music also.
Definitely an incredible performance by Gena Rowlands as Myrtle. The hype is real. People who love acting, theatre, plays, natural dialogue, spontaneous improvising should enjoy this movie. It is because of this movie I realized why a woman never reveals her age. Fuckin old ass wrinkly hot-flash-havin great great great grandmas!
Anna Magnani's voice is haunting and seductive. Cinematography is RAW and authentic. Beautiful Italian women with dark brown hair and eyes and fully bushed armpit hair are quite a delight to watch. Mamma Roma walking at night with the cops, hoes, and customers is done with one tracking shot and the city lights in the background look like stars in the night sky, very surreal. Incredible music and a classic ending.
You want the fuckin rules well here they are: Rule Number 1. Watch this movie more than once. Rule Number 2. Apply the rules of the game to your own life. Everybody plays games. You women play games with our minds but we love it. Everybody lies. Even YOU who said this wasn't a masterpiece. I wish I didn't have to play these stupid games with society but if you are too REAL for this world, they will MURDER YOU!!!
I'm a step closer to beginning to understand what all the fuss is with Renoir. Thanks for that comment.
Wow....you want some trippy Japanese shit? -Horrible Green Screen special FX -Beautiful Japanese women walking and smiling in slow motion -The girl named "Kung Fu" is fuckin awesome -Interesting choice of music -Ridiculous movie plot It's not hilarious or scary but worth seeing if you want some quirky shit you weird Japanese Anime watching Cosplay RPG Video game playing Criterion watching nerds!
The Dialogue in this film is poetic..... Ingrid Bergman is still beautiful even at that age "GILF!" The English to Swedish transitions were trippy but made sense! Beautiful movie watch it this "Holiday Season" with your own Mother and reveal your true feelings to her the moment the movie ends. And if your Mother is Dead in the Physical form, wait until 2012 because we'll all be united for the next Earth!
Awesome beginning, but then they start to introduce all these characters it's hard to keep track of who's who, and when someone is killed in the exact same way with the "freeze-fame then cue theme music" after that shit happens 20 times it gets annoying. The violence is classic over the top gunshots with fake bright red paint. At times it seems comical, action, cheesy, but it's still enjoyable. Stylish ending too!
The first Miyazaki I ever viewed and is one of the most visually beautiful anime's ever. Storyline could become cliche, and drag-on, but the ANIMATION/COLORS in combination with the score make it an absolute must-see especially when THC is tickling your brain cells. Is it a fuckin MASTERPIECE...come on now...it LOOKS good! And I disrepect anybody on this site who reviewed the English Dubbed version.
Saw this movie with friends at a cinemateque, their reactions were "WTF was that?". I mean the story isn't anything groundbreaking, but the animation/imagery by Topor in harmony with the psychedlic 70s soundtrack make this a must watch. I mean yeah we were high of course...but I rewatched it on DVD SOBER (because I had no weed) and I still enjoyed the visuals. An entertaining movie take your kids to watch it now!
Split-screen shots are brilliant! Bernard Herrmann's score can get annoying and over-the-top compared to his other scores. Acting is typical B-Movie 70s. Margot Kidder's forced French accent was bad but not annoying because she's beautiful and we get to see her tits. Worth watching with friends during drunken Halloween parties!
This movie shouldn't even be blessed with my review....I don't understand how people can be scared of this generic been-there-done-that Hollywood but Spanish language typical ghost movie. The twists were predictable, no suspense, music was trying to hard to scare you. Complete waste of time, unless you're the pussy type to get scared from this nonsense...in that case I'm fucking SCARED OF YOU!
Alright so I'm searching the internet to download some of the most disturbing/horrific movies ever created. And for some damn reason this comedy Happiness keeps being listed! Honestly this was a COMEDY.......I laughed.....yeah I was of course uneasy with all the pedo shit who wasn't but in terms of a HARROWING DISTURBING unforgettable movie...nahh man this shit was OVER-RATED as fuck! PURE GIGGLES!
Possession was definitely not the scariest shit I've seen, but like what everyone is saying Adjani the actress does some of the best "being possessed" acting I've ever seen in a Horror movie. Some of the acting by the male actors and dialogue was so Soap-Operish on PBS Cheesey Made-For-TV 80s shitty acting but the gore, and the appearance of the "creature" make this a MUST SEE! Isabelle Adjani I bow down to you!
We all know that this movie is 100% Propaganda to instill the White Image of Christ into the subconcious of many people in the theatre at the time of 1927. Come on we all know that Cecil B Demille was a Freemason. But for a propaganda film, BEAUTIFUL CINEMATOGRAPHY and SPECIAL EFFECTS for it's time! The SCORE from the Criterion Version is outstanding. What else can I say it was pretty EPIC!
It's only 1 hour, looks low budget, you can tell they are on a soundstage instead of outside. But you have some CLASSIC Kurosawa shots and characters. It was like a short live action black and white Anime. Especially the scene with the "Nine-Syllable-Mantra" special move that SCENE (you know what I'm talking about) is on some fuckin crazy anime shit! Not the best Kurosawa film, but a MUST-SEE for fans! Watch it!
If you had 90 million dollars to spend it in ONE MONTH what the fuck would you do? Well if you're the main character in this film you'd spend it all on bitches, hoes, and pleasures of the flesh! It wasn't the best film I've seen, but it was still enjoyable from beginning to end. I recommend all guys to watch this movie with their girlfriend, and if she acts like any of the bitches in this flick, slap that hoe!!!
So THIS is the movie where the popular term "tugging at your heart strings" came from! I swear they fucking OVERDID the Bernard Herrmann score! When they FIRST played it during the restaurant scene that was PERFECTION but after it just got fucking annoying. UNEXPECTED ending..but very HAUNTING. Beautiful cinematography, shitty dialogue, and drags a little too long. I will have to rewatch one day with commentary.
What an amazing adventure! You want comedy, action, great dialogue, suspense, beautiful cinematography, toy train models and an ending so awesome that you have to rewatch it again! This movie already establishes Hitchcock as a master filmmaker. There's nothing more to be said, buy the criterion collection right now or find a way to download this shit and invite your friends over to watch this!
I'll keep it real I can't relate you to "suicidees" out there. No offense, I just have an overwhelming sense of "survival" attitude in me that I can't actually kill myself it's not in my nature to have suicidal tendencies. Does that mean I'm better than you? Of course not...I probably say, "Fuck the world!" more times in a day than I've said, "Hello" on my cell phone. With that said, I CAN RELATE to the main character in this movie. Here is someone who wants to connect with friends, women, he longs to captivate them and have time stand still but when he touches them there's no feeling. It seems he was a lady's man when he was younger, is well off financially. But money hoes and cars don't mean shit when you can't relate to other fuckin human beings on this planet. I loved Jeanne Moreau's scenes in this. The things she says are just so poignant, poetic, and beautiful. I recommend this movie to all depressed suicidal people out there to watch all alone in solitude with a fuckin shotgun pointed at their brains, but don't forget about the suicide goodbye letter, keep it short but make it POETIC...just like the character in this film! 8 out of 10
I'll keep this short...if you didn't cry at the end of this movie you don't have a soul! MASTERPIECE! Fuck all the detailed analysis this movie is pure POETRY in MOTION. What the hell are you still doing reading the reviews go out and BUY THIS FUCKING MASTERPIECE RIGHT NOW and appreciate the genius that is Louis Malle! Goodbye my children..........
Scary?? Ehhh not really. But if you want to watch an anthology of 3 Japanese Folklore ghost stories you'll definitely enjoy this. Just remember sometimes it's very slow......but the VISUALS....the paintings....the sounds is what makes this movie. The story with the blind monk has some very MEMORABLE scenes....I won't ruin it but it involves ghosts and floating fireballs in a cemetary. I honestly thought this shit would be a masterpiece...because I am a horror fan...and I want shit to scare me!! But it was still a good experience....and I didn't have to pay for shit!
Wow I remember back in the day I wanted to watch "Seven Samurai" so badly that I fucking went to the LIBRARY and RENTED THE VHS tapes. The quality was so fucking shitty and the subtitles were actually BELOW my screen and cut off that I couldn't appreciate it. Now I finally waited until 2010 (I know where the fuck was I?!?) and I illegally downloaded the Criterion 3 Disc Collection of Akira Kurosawa's Samurai Adventure and holy shit! I haven't LAUGHED so hard at a Kurosawa film this much! Toshiro Mifune's character was so fucking HILARIOUS like those Anime characters come to life. Speaking of ANIME...that SLOW MOTION SAMURAI DEATH KILL beats any ANIME sequence on Earth PERIOD! That style.....is just fucking incredible. I enjoyed this classic from beginning to end...and I can't wait to rewatch it with commentaries and extras, if I wasn't such a broke piece of shit I would buy this 75 dollar boxset but thanks to the internet I can enjoy this piece of ART and share my thoughts with other film geeks on auteurs I mean MUBI! P.S. Seeing that japanese farmer girl slowly wash her long curly black hair was the most beautiful scene I have ever witnessed in an Akira Kurosawa movie....!
This is my first Swedish film that isn't an Ingmar Bergman film and I would have to say wow what an amazing movie........! The dream sequences, the camera work, the closeups, the paintings, the ENDING! It was cool to see some of Ingmar Bergman's regulars in this movie like Max Von Sydow, but it's really the character of Miss Julie who really shines. Gradually we begin to learn about her childhood, upbringing and her parents. She's a very complex character. Everything flows so smoothly in this movie, the cuts, the cinematography, the brilliant acting. I definitely look forward to watching this gem again! Highly recommend for Swedish Film lovers!!!
I'm Filipino and I have never heard of this director I know BLASPHEMY! I'm Filipino yet I don't understand Tagalog again FUCKING BLASPHEMY! But I need to experience these films with English Subtitles! Is there any place on the internet I can download any of these films as a torrent, rapidshare links? Shit I'll even buy the DVD if the transfer is good and it has English subs. If any fan of Mike De Leon can help me see his works of art and help me enrich my tastes of Philippine Cinema please PM me!
Pussy Whipped and Cock-Tease......that's what they should of named this title.......... But seriously......as a male I can attest to treating women like objects sometimes....but this movie WOW.... The use of 2 actresses was GENIUS, the psycho-analyst midget, the water-pouring, the beautiful breasts, and the poetic longings of lyrical love from Conchita made this movie a beautiful experience to sit through. Although the ending is very 70s with the effects, it was the only way to end the movie. No spoilers of course. Men: take your girlfriend, wife, the chick you wanna fuck to this movie, then she'll appreciate how artistic, sensitive and cultured you are!
This was my first Mikio Naruse film and I enjoyed every minute of it. Setsuko Hara is breathtakingly gorgeous to look at even when she's crying. I can't wait to watch this movie with the commentary and see his other films. This was a work of art, it was poetic, subtle, touching, lots of memorable scenes. The "Noh" mask scene stuck in my mind, and the curly locks of Setsuko Hara with her distinctive smile always gets me.
The first time I watched this in Grade 10 English Class in High School, was the day I became a Roman Polanski fan. The naked fucking old witches?!?! The BEAUTY of Lady Macbeth, the cold muddy castles, and of course the poetic eloquent language courtesy of Shakespeare make this a MUST-SEE! I encourage everyone on this website to EXPERIENCE this movie and soak in the atmosphere and story and characters.
