I think the main point/theme of this film is simply the tagline: …look closer. If you look closer anywhere, be it suburbia, people, art, etc., you’ll find something that lives beneath the surface. American Beauty does a superb job at peeking into the window of lives that many people idolize, yet don’t realize has problems of its own.
I, like Stephen Day, used to not really care for him. It was until I saw Rashomon I really started to respect him. I tried to sit through Seven Samurai, but I just couldn’t. I did eventually and I’ve come to realize and see why he is so well respected.
Kurosawa was a great director, however, I can understand someone’s distaste, as well.

Citizen Kane, more or less. Jules and Jim, Amadeus, The Best of Youth, Atonement (sort of) all come to mind
