Bergman vs. Godard about 3 years ago

I have not seen enough of Godard, as compared to how much I’ve seen of Bergman, so I’d have to say that I can identify more with Bergman (for now), how ever, I love the fact that both have such different narration styles and how they can make it work in the way they do. Both posess an incredible sensibility, and are able to portray it in their films with greatness and in a truly unique way.

WHY DO WE CARE SO MUCH ABOUT INFLUENCE? about 3 years ago

Well, I believe you can use anything that really gets to you. I mean, everything’s been done already, its not like you’re gonna be looking for original themes, you just make them your own. Its not wrong to be inspired on what you see, if it works on what you’re doing of course, and as long as you can make it your own. This influence applies to everything, not only film, but art, literature, music, anything really. Woody Allen is a huge fan of Ingmar Bergman and the Marx Brothers, and has really been influenced by them, but he has taken all that influence and used it in his own original way. You use what has influenced you to make it your own.

If You Could Direct A Remake... almost 3 years ago

I wouldn’t do this, but I believe that the next most controversial shot-by-shot remake (if I may say so), following GVS’ Psycho would be Citizen Kane :O that’d be fun to see (or not). Wouldn’t be up to it though :P

favorite funniest movie almost 3 years ago

Off the top of my head, one of the most original comedies I’ve seen in my entire life, this film from Taiwan I think it is, titled Sell Out! It’s amazing, I almost died watching it, serious laughter, if anyone can check it out, please do it.

I also love Annie Hall, and I’m in urge to watch Big Lebowski (I know I guess I’m caught up).

Director's Best AND Worst Films almost 3 years ago

Aw man, I love Eyes Wide Shut, I find it quite powerful. I haven’t had the courage to watch GVS’ Psycho, I don’t want to hate the guy, I think Paranoid Park is my favorite (out of the ones I’ve seen), Finding Forrester would be my choice on the one I’ve enjoyed the least.

I love Kubrick, my favorite would be between 2001 and Clockwork Orange. I guess I didn’t enjoy Lolita that much.

if rock stars were auteurs almost 3 years ago

Pink Floyd would be awesome film auteurs, don’t know why but I picture something similar to David Lynch films.

I once heard that Jim Morrison studied film, an outcome would have been interesting.

How about a film by Ozzy Osbourne? that’d be weird :s

Defining films of the deacade almost 3 years ago

oh lord please don’t tell me that across the universe is a defining film of the decade, that would turn this decade into a really sad one for cinema. the film’s only good is the fact they are able to show the good songs of the Beatles to a newer generation, however, the story (script and characters) are terribly constructed, not believeble in any way, I love the Beatles, but the film isn’t simply as great as the songs and the band it uses, definitely not a defining film in my opinion.

Defining:
- Mulholland Dr.
- Dogville
- Lord of the Rings (true, the Star Wars of the decade)
- Paranoid Park
- Fight Club
- Kill Bill 1&2
- City of God

Of course there’s many others, just can’t remember right now.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009, Terry Gilliam) Trailer almost 3 years ago

The art in Gilliam’s films is awesome, I like it much more as compared to Tim Burton’s, both are very plastic, but there just something about Burton I just can’t digest, way too purple.

I don’t really know if what you mean is that you agree with me or you disagree with me KJ, :s It is not my intention to denigrate Tim Burton, it’s just my personal taste, I like Gilliam’s art better.

Overrated Movies almost 3 years ago

I wouldn’t say 2001 is overrated, take into account that this film was made in 1968, I mean, it’s pure visual innovation, as well as a preface to all these “new” movies (terminator, the matrix, i robot, etc.) that portray the rise of machines over humanity, which could now be considered as a cliché topic. But well, overrated and underrated are personal opinions, and I can understand why 2001 could be overrated to some people.

In my opinion, Slumdog Millionaire is overrated, it’s not bad, but it ain’t that good either.

Titanic, kind of redundant to mention it.

Batman Begins is a bit overrated in my opinion, or rather more to my taste.

WHY GO TO THE MOVIES? almost 3 years ago

I’m not really even in favor of pausing the movie, it kind of gets you out of it, I know it’s necessary sometimes, but I’d rather not have to do it. Yes, the theaters nowadays are pretty expensive, but it also depend on the movie you’re going to see, there’s some films that you can really enjoy on a regular TV and some films that you simply can’t miss on the big screen. It’s all relative really, don’t listen to me.

Books about film technique/criticism almost 3 years ago

Both Gilles Deleuze’s books on studies on cinema are incredibly enlightening and complex, Deleuze is able to determine very abstract characteristics of films into very specific ideas and concepts.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s book is also great, Sculpting in Time, I believe would be the title in english. Very deep and beautiful.

Truffaut’s book about Hitchcock is wonderful as well.

Cannes Winners vs. Oscar Winners almost 3 years ago

the oscars are a weird thing in my opinion, they give awards to films that have been made in a particular amount of time by a particular industry. I mean, the oscars are a very closed circle, while cannes in the other hand, is an international festival, where there is a larger diversity. there is a huge difference between a festival and a.., I don’t know, award-giving-ceremony.

I love films that have won the Oscar and also films that have won the Palm d’or, but what I like about cannes is that it is much more international.

If Godard Made Transformers... almost 3 years ago

I think this topic is amazing, we should begin a series of forum topics regarding this, what-if-who-had-directed-what haha

I just imagine Jean Paul Belmondo playing the lead, and Anna Karinna would be the equivalent to Megan Fox’s character. Optimus would not speak in a voice over, but instead, sitting in some garage talking directly to the camera. Anna Karinna would end up conquering Optimus’ heart.

What are the best written film characters of the past ten years? almost 3 years ago

This is a bit longer than 10 years but I gotta say that Forest Whitaker’s character on Ghost Dog is great.

Mark Wahlberg in The Departed, simply badass.

Heath Ledger’s Joker, I know it’s a topic that we’ve heard enough of, but the character doeas have an amazing psichology.

Benicio del Toro in CHE, amazing actor, charismatic character.

I agree with Zachary, Bill’s character in KB is awesome, so complex and serene.

I also agree with Orcun, Mickey and Mallory Knox are just great.
