I have a feeling that many people would disagree, but “Cries and Whispers” is the film that turned me onto Bergman. I’ve noticed that people seem to classify it as more “advanced” Bergman, but I found it really accessible and powerful. If I were to introduce a more “casual” film fan to his work, however, I might actually choose “Hour of the Wolf” over “Wild Strawberries”.
The only film I vividly remember falling asleep in was “The Matrix”. I know, that’s an odd one… but, I guess I must’ve been really tired! Slept through the majority of the latter half of the film.
Last fall, I went to see “Flash of Genius” at a local dollar theater. I believe I fell asleep, but i’m not sure… all I know is that I was bored to tears and zoned out for some extended lengths of time. Every once in awhile i’d look at the screen, notice that everything was unfamiliar, and wonder whether or not I had dozed off.

I’d been saving for the DeepDiscount sale for a few months by selling the junk from my collection on E-Bay (maybe “Drop Dead Fred” and “Meteor Man” aren’t essential)… but, still, let’s face it – i’m a junkie!
Yikes! Quite a few things have gone unavailable. Some i’ve noticed thus far are Exterminating Angel, Billy Liar, Diabolique, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind, BRD Trilogy, etc. They were all available yesterday.
Someone over at DVD Talk said that they went from 360 to 270 titles within the span of a day. If you’ve got some orders to make, better not wait until the last minute…
I guess it’s a blessing in disguise – it’ll keep me from blowing even more money!
I couldn’t be anymore excited! A.O. Scott is very intelligent and well-spoken, and although Michael Phillips may not be as thorough in his approach, he has a clever enough wit to keep things entertaining. Roeper grew on me as well, and I hope this doesn’t mean the proposed new Ebert show (which Roeper and Phillips were attached to) is canned.
Mank wasn’t fantastic by any means, but he did keep me watching despite the extreme dip in quality. I’ll miss him on the program. That being said, however, I don’t know if there’s a better pair than Phillips and Scott if Roeper is out of the mix.
Bit of a heads up: Nights of Cabiria is listed as in the sale and in stock. Tried to order it in the last sale but it went OOS – hopefully it gets here this time!
Ordered:
Army of Shadows
Jeanne Dielman
Nights of Cabiria
The Sword of Doom
That Hamilton Woman
Vampyr
Z
There’s a lot more that I want. Now, to not-so-subtly hint to family members that Christmas shopping can’t wait…
That is correct. For the last sale, I was able to cancel my membership via phone after a few weeks with no problems.
However, i’m not sure how it effects you down the line in getting a new membership. Presumably you can renew with no hassle, but i’d imagine there’s got to be some limit to how many times you cancel a membership.
I, too, buy an excess of DVD’s for no rational reason. Whenever I have some spare cash to spend and there’s a DVD sale, I tend to go nuts with movies that, while I do like, I likely won’t ever get around to watching again.
Perhaps Criterion binges do have something to do with ego. I tend to use the “conversational piece” argument in support of my habit, but, realistically, nobody will ever ask me to borrow “In the Realm of the Senses” on blu-ray. It has something to do with the label, the extras, and the appreciation of the filmmaker – but, at the same time, sometimes you may just want to buy a DVD to say you did.
I had an English teacher who would always bring up this situation: a man invites guests over, and they are taken aback by the sheer size of his library. When they ask “have you read ALL of them?”, he replies “if I had, then it wouldn’t be much of a library”.
As has been said, there’s worse things to be spending money on… but, still, that doesn’t quite explain some of our absurd spending habits!
Yeah, Nights of Cabiria seems to have been a mistake. Placed my order last night and now it says “Ships December 1st”. Quite sure it’ll never get here.

I noticed that B&N doesn’t charge your card until your items are shipped.
Could this mean that, if you have items to be shipped after 8/3, that it will charge the full non-sale price?

Does anybody know anything about an official DVD release date? NetFlix seems to be the only place carrying it at the moment.
