Atom Egoyan has cemented his place as one of my favorite non-linear storytellers. The narrative of this films unfolds in such a perfect way. The scenes on the flight are outstanding. Would make a neat double feature with Ang Lee's 'The Ice Storm'.
If this is a failure, it is an interesting failure. I don't know. I don't know. I think I am trying my best not to construct any sort of narrative with the pieces Lynch has give me. It is an experience. Mulholland Drive's ugly stepsister. My first instinct is to never watch it again. This is an instinct I must betray. Two stars, because an illogical rating seems like a logical response. What?
I am amused.
Plays like 'torture porn' but is far more interesting. Surprised I liked it as much as I did. Tom Six has beat Eli Roth and Takashi Miike at their own games.
I'm tempted to think less of it because of how dated it feels, but nah...
Totally underrated.
The movie falls apart for me, because of the lack of believability in the actions of the characters. I do think there are some genuinely fantastic moments. But I feel that there are more moments where the film is just confused as to what it wants to be. Not quite a good or bad movie.
Watching hands smoothly snatch wallets and watches shouldn't be this mesmerizing.
It may just be a series of gags strung together by a weak (though amusing) narrative, but I find it irresistibly charming. Films are rarely this much fun.
A fantastic film, but I feel that its comedy hides a mean-spiritedness.
You know what, Andhika? I had the exact same thoughts regarding Inception in relation to Shutter Island.
I liked it more for what it could have been than what it actually was. Disappointing, but still a good film. Probably Nolan's fluffiest film.
As good as any of Ozu's own.
A great film for the opening scene alone.
Fluffy.
There is some good stuff in the screenplay, but it is buried under weak filmmaking.
I don't consider it a lesser film than the original. It is, however, a pointless film. Totally redundant.
It's not a great film by any means, but it is more than competent. Probably gets a lot of undeserved flack.
It is everything the typical Woody Allen film isn't; it shouldn't work, but it does.
Might just be Wes Anderson's best film.
Both soothing and unbearable.
Really enjoyed it for what it was. It may be John Waters lite, but it isn't a lesser work.
I'm a sucker for good child actors.
Lili Taylor manages to outact River Phoenix in this not-so simple romance.
Not very flashy, cinematically. It is, however, incredibly subtle. Highly underrated. Or maybe just overlooked.
Almost achieves perfection.
The narrative is a mess, but the visuals more than make up for that.
Ridiculous...but enjoyable.
Horror takes female form. Not as stylized as Von Trier's 'Antichrist' but far more soul-shaking.
It may be a terrible film, but you can see shades of 'Punch-Drunk Love' inside it.
