there’s a bunch of scores cited that i think is top notch but one in particular is haunting me since the first time i saw the film. it’s the score for THE FOUNTAIN by CLINT MANSELL. my favorite right now.
James Gray is one of the best directors working today. Is he an auteur? I think so. When I found out this site I’ve tried to put his name on my favorite auteurs and his name wasn’t listed. I got really upset. I don’t know if now we are capable of adding him up. In 1996 I watched for the first time LITTLE ODESSA and was blown away by it. I couldn’t take the movie out of my head for days. I kept asking myself how someone so young could do such a mature film. THE YARDS is a good movie and you can see that Gray is constructing his own style much on the vain of great auteurs from the 70’s like the ones Matt Parks cited above. WE OWN THE NIGHT is great. The first few minutes is a masterpiece in giving the tone and the visual of the film. That car chasing under the rain is absolutely fantastic. One of the best car chase in the history of cinema hands down. Looking forward to see TWO LOVERS. I think anything he puts his hands on will be of great quality.
@Ryan Estabrooks: Oh man …well done. Kudos to you to remember that scene at the drug’s lord house. I almost had a heart attack the first time saw it. It’s unbeliavable how Gray can capture the intensity of the moment and throw in the face of the viewer. I felt inside that place.
Christian Volckam’s RENAISSANCE is a unique piece of animation. The use of shadows, black and white are gorgeous. Unfortunately the story is full of clichés.
Trent Reznor, the dudes from Stars of The Lid, Jónsi from Sigur Rós, Richard D James a.k.a Aphex Twin and other two who already made interesting movies: Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips (CHRISTMAS ON MARS) and the guys from Daft Punk (ELECTROMA).
One film that was not mentioned yet and deserve attention from all you cinephiles out there is THE YEAR THAT MY PARENTS WENT ON VACATION (O Ano Que Meus Pais Sairam De Férias) by Cao Hamburger.
A lot of excellent movies were already cited. I’d like to add two that I’ve found quite good: SÍLENÍ (aka LUNACY) by Jan Svankmajer and TAXIDERMIA by György Pálfi.
It’ so good to see people praising this movie. It’s my favorite Winterbottom movie with CODE 46 close in second. The cinematography by Sean Bobbit alongside Michael Nyman’s score is a feast for the senses.
I’ll second Josh Ryan. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE put tear on my eyes every time I watch it. This never happened to me with any other movie. It’s weird … maybe I’m getting old and too damn nostalgic.
In Marc Forster’s STAY, we have Dr. Sam Foster (Ewan MacGregor) being the Superego and Lilla Culpepper (Naomi Watts) incorporating the Id. They keep having interesting arguments throughout the movie. Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling) could be the Ego fighting his way between the authoritative ways of the Superego and the animal instinct of the Id. It sounds weird but if i get a little more specific I could spoil the movie for who haven’t seem yet.
Well … I really don’t care for the 27% on rotten tomatoes. I think the movie is great and it’s pretty underrated. It’s Marc Forster best work , hands down. It also has an excellent work in photography and edition. The movie is a good trip and the less you know more you will enjoy. I remember watching this movie in an empty theater and when I was walking out the room a couple was discussing how bad the movie was. Got into my car and start to think about it on my way home. Dreamt with the movie that night. Next day I had to watch it again. I went to an even emptier session and got to fill in the gaps in some scenes. Walked out liking it more than the first time. You can be sure that It’s the kind of “love or hate” movie. So… to put in a few words … there’s a lot to spoil! I think you should check it out and afterwards we talk. Sorry, mate! ;)

@kimberly and @cineaste … feels good to know other people liked this movie. i saw "Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken” a little more than a month ago on cable and loved the film. first thing i did after i’ve watched the movie was to go online and tried to find it here on the auteurs. got disappointed to not find listed here or, at least, commented in the forum. the party scenes, the soundtrack, the whole vibe of the movie gave a nice portrait of being young in the 20’s. it feels so close of the reality of our days. reckless and hedonistic.
