The ending is amazing!
I want to see it soooo bad. Why is it playing everywhere except Portland, OR?
The message of the film felt generic, the story was superficial, and I was bored. The plot fell apart in the end and I'm sick of seeing George Clooney play that same role over and over again.
The film is beautiful, it is a technical masterpiece. It was nice to see some strong female leading characters with thoughtful character development. The majority of the complaints I have heard from critics and audiences seem to be due to unrealistic expectations. It is still a giant blockbuster film. Why would you expect anything more than the generic Hollywood plot line. The breakthrough in film making is not in the story being told but the technology and wizardry of the aesthetic presentation. That being said, the film is problematic and fucked up on multiple levels. The representation of "Earth" being the United States Army is creepy and unsettling, the cultural appropriation/homogenization of the African "savage" was racist and inherently imperialistic. And, the perpetuation of war tactics in place of cultural respect and peaceful coexistence is beyond exhausting. Also, I found the music to be overly dramatic and ineffective.
