Response to Matthew: No i mean wahat is Wes Anderson’s best film. I guess i could’ve made that a little more clear. Maybe I’d like to make fifty films, but I just want every film I make to be viewed as great (which I know is far fetched) so maybe i’d only have made a dozen by the time I’ve left.
Would anyone else here consider this new film movement called the American New Wave including filmmakers Wes Anderson, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Sofia Coppola, David O. Russell, Richard Linklater, or Charlie Kaufman a legitimate film movement. Personally, I say yes. A man named Derek Hill even wrote a book on it called Charlie Kaufman and Hollywood’s Merry Band of Pranksters, Fabulists and Dreamers. The book could outrageously pretentious or turn on all the thoughts you had in the back in mind into understandable words. So i guess this post really includes two questions regarding the movement and the book.
I would have to say no. I have always been a movie fan and always watched movies from silent to the one’s out next summer, but this is the decade I fell in love with cinema and the same decade it loved me back. Metropolis and 2001: A Space Odyssey told me that I love movies and that I might want to make movies for a living. Then movies like Children of Men, There Will Be Blood, and The Darjeeling Limited told me that I really wanted to be a filmmaker.
I’m young (16 by the way), possibly naive, but I know I love movies. I’m critical of films, but I enjoy the thrill of experiencing a film. There is no worst decade in film for me, there are only ones that there have ever been movies.
We actually discussed this film for my school’s Film Club. Everyone enjoyed it (I actually thought it was brilliant aesthetically and character development-ly) but we all agreed a worthwhile discussion of the film was not possible. It is what it is, which is great.
viewership doesn’t even determine how great a movie is. the dark knight broke the opening weekend record, but before that it was pirates of the carribean 3, and everybody knows that was terrible.
I hope Don Hertzfeldt will be recognized as one of America’s best animators. Hopefully an animated film will win Best Picture. I just hope the Oscars change and recognize something else besides melodramas.
Personally, I’m expecting WTWTA to be the better of the two. I’ve seen every W. Anderson film and I’ve only seen S. Jonze’s music videos (great collection by the way), but it might be to early to tell since the trailer for Fantastic Mr. Fox isn’t even out yet. Who knows? Maybe you.
that’s probably true, but the copy I read had different illustrations. i;m very curious about how they designed the characters since Wes has never done an animated film before.

I believe there commonalities between the films of these directors. How influential they will be in the history of cinema only time can tell.

To Shade Slayer: The book I mentioned actually has a great section on how New Hollywood influenced the so-called American New Wave.
