Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church in Sideways
Robero Benigni, Giorgio Cantarini in La Vita e Bella
Elijah Wood, Sean Astin in The Lord of the Rings
Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi in Il Postino
Runner Up: Mathieu Amalric, Max von Sydow in The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, They have very few moments together, but when they are, you really believe these two are father and son.
Hou Hsiao-Hsien with Cafe Lumiere (or Kohi Jiko as it is called in Japanese), his homeage to Yasuhiro Ozu, is the best homeage I’ve ever seen. He absorbs Ozu’s style and delivers something that feels both completely familiar and fresh for the late japanese director lovers. Respect and innovation ooze throughout all the movie.
Sounds like Last Life in the Universe, but that was a guy not a boy, or maybe, Dare mo shiranai (Nobody Knows). No idea really, you don’t have any other detail or memory?
The list is too long, so here are just the 2 most recent ones:
The Day the Earth Stood Still, the remake.
Watchmen
Any other world-disaster movie involving a guy and girl who are (kind of) in love (or eventually fall for each other and/or any of it’s variations) and eventually save the world
OMG, someone please stop this from happening!! It will be wrong on so many levels. No only the casting, they will also make sure it gets PG rated, which means not only tweaking essential parts of the plot, but also making the action sequences less real. Hope it never happens.
An extremely intricate new kind of fantasy, which for me, is among the very few who is able to pose a challenge against LOTR, however, the locations and characters are more diverse and most of the story is expressed through the emotions of the main characters.
The Silmarilion also would be extremely hard to adapt to film, since it’s mostly pure concept.
