Who's the greatest and/or most influential film director? about 2 years ago

I agree with the posting that argues Orson Wells. Except for radical cinema, all filmmakers use Well’s techniques or techniques that derive from his work to express time, and assembling a narrative structure. (Even films like Memento and Pulp Fiction that use a non-traditional narrative style do so in contrast to the sort of things that Wells showed film makers that can do.)

As for Hitchcock, I know film makers seem to love him, but I’m genuinely bewildered as to why. I think “Vertigo” is a masterpiece, and he’s made some fun movies (The Lady Vanishes, Birds), but I don’t see him in the same class as Kurosawa or Bergman.

WHO IS / WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FILM ACTRESS EVER? about 2 years ago

My list of favourite actresses. Certainly, they are all beautiful, but more importantly, they are skillful actresses.

Gong Li
Charolette Rampling
Setsuko Hara
Eva Green
Isabelle Adjani
Anna Karina
Louise Brooks
Uma Thurman
Jennifer Connelly
Maggie Cheung
Selma Hayeck

There are some others that didn’t quite make the list: Pam Grier, Monica Bellucci.

Lost about 2 years ago

I rented Lost and burned through seasons 1 – 5 fairly quickly. It can be very melodramatic (in a bad way) and has a soap opera element to it (which I’m not oppose to).

I think the show succeeds because so many “mysteries” are thrown up in the air, and there’s just enough answers to tantalize the viewer. The show isn’t afraid of killing off main characters so the viewers know that anything can happen.

A problem I have with the show is that the two principals (Jack and Kate) aren’t interesting after the second season.

I won’t b watching 6 until it comes out on blu ray — so until then I’ll have to pass on the rest of this thread.

Top 10 TV Shows of all time about 2 years ago

My list is:

1. The Wire
2. M*A*S*H*
3. Twilight Zone
4. The Simpsons
5. Seinfeld
6. The Prisoner
7. The Cosby Show
8. Arrested Development
9. Carnavale
10. I Love Lucy

I don’t count mini-series; otherwise I, Claudius would be just under The Wire.

You have to have seen at least 5 silent films to be a film buff. about 2 years ago

I’m impressed that there seem to be so many knowledgeable people in this forum. Any opinions on silent vs. sound remakes? King of Kings vs King of Kings, or Ben-Hur vs. Bn-Hur? The Last of the Mohicans vs. The Last of the Mohicans?

I’m curious about what the people who have seen the silent version of a film and the sound version have to say about the differences in story telling technique.

I’d love to buy it but I already have the dvd. This is why I stopped buying criterion dvds. I’ll only buy blu-rays now.

TOP BERGMAN almost 2 years ago

I feel like Hour of the Wolf never gets as much love as it deserves. But my all time favorite is the Seventh Seal.

Persona is a great, great film. A lot of films become irrelevant after they become parodied and aped. But Persona continues to be great despite being parodied in places like the Simpsons.

WHAT IS YOUR PICK FOR THE WORSE MOVIE EVER MADE? almost 2 years ago

I haven’t kept a close eye on what others have said. I have a two way tie on the worst. Braveheart and gladiator. Ew.

Top 10 TV Shows of all time over 1 year ago

I’ve commented here before, but I’m doing so again to draw attention to two points (not necessarily to get attention): 1) the wire is the best show ever; and 2) I haven’t really considered miniseries (e.g., Roots) to be tv shows. Otherwise you may need to count movies as shows; especially if they’re split over two nights. But what about British shows? Arguably I, Cladius is a show. if so, I would put I, Claudius in any top ten list.

The Last Picture Show — on laser disc! (although it’s possible it was the LD for Akira.)
