Greg: Filmography

The Fighter

The first film I've seen in the theater in the past year and a half -- it was worth it. Great, great acting.

Under the Volcano

The films (as the novel) takes place in 1938. There's something about its style that reminds me of the films that were made around that time.

Camille Claudel

This film is less than the sum of its parts. Brilliant acting and photography. A fascinating story with tried and true themes. Nice work in the costumes and set pieces. But somehow there’s something missing. Somehow it falls flat.

The Holy Mountain

What sort of demented mind could conceive such beautiful and disturbing images? The story makes a little more sense than the way its told – but that’s not the point. The project is about visuals and staging. Its about challenging the audience

Angela

A few nice shots -a few brilliant visuals- and flashes of what Rebecca Miller had yet to show. Good, but not unforgettable.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Not even Gong Li could save this awful, awful film.

Pierrot le fou

Seeing the criterion blu-ray edition is like seeing the film again for the first time. (Put that on your holiday card and sell it!)

Pierrot le fou

This film is very under-appreciated.

With the exception of the 2000 U.S. Presidential election, never has the struggle between good and evil been more clear! You say its a 84 minute toy commercial, I say its a sublime contemplation of the fragility of life, and the possibility that morality can exist during a civil war. (A civil war between giant transforming robots that is.)

Transformers: The Movie

I thought that the story was engaging and the visuals were stunning. My son on the other hand thought it was an intellectual movie trying not to be intellectual.

Friends with Money

Despite the ending being a little trite, I thought this movie was funny & pleasant.

Tunes of Glory

John Mills won the awards, but Alec Guinness dominates the film. The characters are messy and they make irrational decisions.

A Scanner Darkly

I liked it. I thought the performances were strong and I thought the animation was a neat choice.

Sólo con tu pareja

I was surprised by how funny this movie was. It was really unexpected. But what happened with Claudia Ramirez? She seems to have been banished to Mexica TV, but with her good looks and quiet ethos you would think she would be a huge international star.

Sólo con tu pareja

My friends who went to film school found Bergman boring, which explains a lot about the state of U.S. films. This movie (along with Winter Light) should probably be required viewing for anyone who wants to make a movie.

I used to think Bergman was boring (I had only seen "The Virgin Spring" when I came to that conclusion), but then I saw "Wild Strawberrries", "The Seventh Seal", "Persona" and the Trilogy of Faith and realized what a truly important artist he is even after death.

Donald Kaufman

When will The Auteurs list Donald Kaufman's unappreciated masterpiece, "The Three?"

Cast Member Still

I don't think the image that the Auteurs displays is actually from the film. It looks like Bugsy.

Winter Light

Is it because the expectations were raised so high that I'm disappointed? The only Bergman film I've seen that I didn't love.

I *really* wanted to like this film. It was okay.

A Christmas Tale

Its too easy to say this is a French "Royal Tennenbaums" -- but everyone knows what you mean.

Un chien andalou

There are a handful of interesting images and techniques in this film (ants crawling from a stigmata like wound & the juxtaposition of clouds moving in front of a full moon and a razor slicing an eyeball), but its nothing more than a curiosity.

Besides a very good score and nice photography, this movies does not have much to offer -- its a comedy that just isn't funny.

Ah! The last good movie Woody ever made.

I'm not sure if this film is a masterpiece or not, but if not its as close as you can come without being one.

This film made no sense. The characters lacked depth. The fight scenes were boring. Can I give this movie a negative star?

La belle noiseuse

The thing this film does better than any other I've ever seen is show the process. Most filmmakers are scarred to go beyond the emotional process. Rivette shows the mechanics of creating art.

Fists in the Pocket

Where has this movie been the last 35 years of my life? It sounds trite (or like a pick up line) but it must have been shot in 3-D the characters jump off the screen!
