That Cold Day in the Park! See it god damn it.

As I understand it, WUSA was "greylisted" hence went unreleased for more than 40 years. I'd been wanting to see it again for many years. There it was just staring at me on the shelf at the store. I've watched it twice more in the past week or so, and have been reading a few online articles about the film. Its lack of video release until this year (and I cannot imagine it being a favourite at revival cinemas) explains why it's become so forgotten. Such a pity: I love Rheinhardt's "We're okay!" speech and the work from Anthony Perkins as Rainey in the Playboy club. It's a great film with a great bunch of performers. It's critical of reactionary extremism and clearly a "liberal" film of its time, but equally critical of extremism of any sort (e.g. the Rainey character). It's a great film full of contradictory characters. I love films about people becoming the very thing that they despise. This movie is probably too much for contemporary audiences to digest and a lot of people these days would be apathetic about its themes and therefore not care about it. Ironic, considering the film is about an apathetic sellout--or is he?
Any idea when "Taking Off" will show on Retro, Jaspar?
Thanks for the compliment and I'm always glad to see someone else who appreciates Huston's work. :) | I'd love to see Freud on DVD one of these days, I was forced to watch it on YT but I remember being struck by it's noirish qualities [seems closer to that than a 'biopic'.] | I will definitely see Kremlin Letter, along with his other films, at some point. Though it was given a limited release awhile back, it doesn't seem to have made it to NetFlix. :(
