Rejh: Filmography

Kick-Ass

The movie's a disjointed mess. Sometimes, it exploits the same traits of the genre that, at other times, it claims to satirize. A lack of dynamics permeates the work: music, sound design, and MTV editing are cranked up to 11, especially during sequences that fetishize violence. The difference between Tarantino and Vaughn is that, while Tarantino uses style as substance, Vaughn muddles his work through indiscriminate use of style as flare. Usually, when I admit my disappointment with films having similar affectations (e.g. 300), I'm given the same reasoning. "It was amusing. Sit down and relax. It's just simple entertainment, it's not supposed to be anything else. Don't be so picky." Films are so engrossing, most of the time demanding both my eyes and ears, that I'm almost never entertained by films contingent on my turning off my mind for their enjoyment. I like to see cinema as art. Still, to each his own.
