PLUS, according to DVDBeaver, the print is even wider than the Criterion... I switched.
Tried to watch this film on shrooms during my teenage years. BAAAD IDEAAA!!! I wound up stopping the film and pacing the living room floor for the next half hour trying to calm down. When I finally sat down, I stared at the TV's blue screen for the next two hours and was eventually at peace. This is also my favorite Lynch, followed very closely by the amazing Mulholland Drive.
Strange film with the director's signature "real time" progression. Extremely long shots of the protagonists driving around and yet the tension is there. Worth a look if you enjoy contemplative cinema.
Yes this film is SO "hypercritical". There are definitely no redeeming qualities to be found here. No insight into this couples' psyche whatsoever, no social commentary either. I mean come on, it's pretty obvious this is nothing more than "Debbie Does Japan" for goateed hipsters in polo shirts... just like you said... Hmm! Yes! Very hypercritical indeed....
