I don’t think anything is unfilmable. Maybe in an exact translation page by page that that fits what every persons imagination has set upon reading the source material.
I would never think Watchmen could make a good film. I like it. Nor did I think that anyone could make a believable Lord of the Rings film. I like those as well.
Dostoevsky novels seem unfilmable in scope and grandeur but given the right Director and Funding and a three film deal I imagine they can be done well.
But i am really after..
1928 Champagne
1928 The Farmer’s Wife
1930 An Elastic Affair
1930 Elstree Calling
1927 Downhill
1926 The Mountain Eagle
1925 The Pleasure Garden
1923 Always Tell Your Wife
1922 Number 13
If it looks like crap i won’t see it. Simple as that. I didn’t think they should try the Day the Earth Stood Still either so i didn’t see it. I hope that people who did/will see them will want to see the originals. and that is good side effect.
Working for an Airline i met Johnny Cash, Talked to John Denver. Saw Metallica entering a Casnio in Vegas. Greg Hines At the HArd Rock in DC. Oliver Stone in Vegas. Ace Frehely, Brent Spiner, Deforrest Kelly, Marina Sertis, John Frakes GraceLee Whitney.
I love the Film and the Band. Rotten would dislike anything just to do so. I am a fan of his post-Pistols work as well. But if he liked it like it i would have been more suprised. Chloe Webb was great. Each time i watch it i am quoting her for days.
I really enjoy Dr. WHo. And the BBC’s Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, MI5 and Robin Hood. Our stuff i like CAstle, I have stuck with Heroes and have enjoyed many Smallville’s.
I think Woody Allen is in his best form ever. Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra’s Dream to me have been about his best work. I did not care for Vicky Cristina Barcelona but I do think it was a well made film.
When I first saw Match Point I was totally blown away. In some ways I could not belive it was a Woody film similar to the first time I saw Interiors.
Woody’s casts have always been impressive but it has gotten even more so in the recent films.. Scarlett Johansson in some great divers roles. Penélope Cruz, McGregor and Colin Farrell. And in his next film Nicole Kidman, Anthony Hopkins and Josh Brolin.
These films have a darkness not really seen in past films that rise above the Allen dialog and trappings.
In his long career I can only think of two fims I don’t care to view again Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Melinda and Melinda (which is more for my loathing of Will Ferrell).
My biggest fear is that we will lose him before he makes his masterwork.
I think he is growing as a film maker. This London period is a great sign of a evolution in his art (expect Scoop). I think he still has allot to show us.
I am 41. and grew up on Allen’s films. Purple Rose of Cairo is one of the films i like least. I can understand your points but to me his new films are just as vital as his past. These films feel to be a new chapter in his film making to me. RE-Hashed? maybe but i still find them fine films.
Shadow and Fog, Manhatten Murder Mystery and Midsummers… are about my favs. But Scoop had mr laughing out loud and Matchpoint knocked me out.
I just ordered the Eclipse Series 4 – Raymond Bernard. Loved Wooden Crosses but io never saw his Les Miserables. But at 21.00 i thought Wooden Crosses was worth that alone.
