I believe that all three films are wonderful. Gummo, and JDB in particular. They aren’t traditional films, but its time for cinema to evolve. We have been using narrative as the backbone to films for over 100 years, but thats not life. Life starts at birth, and stops at death, in between are stories, there are no master narratives that rule peoples lives, just stories, and thats what Harmony reflects in his films. He is very much ahead of his times, much like Godard, and Anger.
Yeah Ken Park was pretty wank. But i don’t think thats as much of Korines fault as it is clarks, who gave Korine the full outline and basically said write dialogue, (i thought the dialogue was the only decent part).
and in regards to Cassavete and Bergman, i don’t think its fair to say that they have cornered the market on revealing human nature, because human “nature” and behavior is constantly shifting with the hegemony. Also, I didn’t say Korine is ahead of his time for revealing elements of human nature, i said he’s ahead of his time in regards to the form of narrative, or rather lack of a “strong” narrative structure he uses. He presents setting, character, and story, but not a strong narrative.
The only thing i would have changed would be to get rid of courtney taylor as the narrator, he is such a bias twat.
It very interesting to hear the audio commentary with The BJM (not including anton unfortunately), they shine some light onto certain things in the film that are misunderstood about the band, and Anton.
One of the best essays on art ever created. Truly a masterpiece.
I particularly like Well’s Wit through out the film, he just seems like someone you want to hug. But not anymore because he’s a smelly corpse.
If Kinski had been fired, do you think that he would have stopped beating his wife? No, he would have continued. The fact is Kinski was a shit, and was known for beating whoever he felt like. Yet no one is cracking down on him for being violent to handfulls of men. Violence is wrong all around, and if we really believe in equal rights, why arent people up in arms when Kinski for hiting men?
The fact is Herzog put up with loads of abuse from Kinski, so did all of Herzogs crew, why would Kinskis wife be any exception to his abuse, and why is it Herzogs job to stop it? His job is to make films, not play superman.
It is well known that Kinski was almost uncontrolable at times, but Herzog had spent so much time with him, that he could tell when he was going to have a blow up. Do you think that if this was the case, that maybe keeping kinski on board the project would be beneficial to his wife. At least then there would be some sort of monitoring going on, as opposed to a freshly fired Kinski who was still going to beat up his wife?
As far as judging Herzog, i say judge him on his art, because thats wht he puts forth to you to judge. If you were his friend, then you could judge his personality, but your not (well maybe someone here is) so just judge his art.
Then Bay yells roll camera, hoping he can create a feature film out of the fire, with some CRAZY camera effects and some small explosives he has planted around the battle field.
First of all i’m not your bud, so don’t call me bud.
Second, it’s impossible for her to have stockholm syndrome, because she is not a hostage, she was simply in a relationship with Kinski (maybe being held hostage and relationships are synonymous for you, but for most people they are not). I believe what you were trying to say, was that she was caught in the cycle of abuse (thats a clinical word by the way).
Third, you say that you “tend to condemn violence and inhumanity and injustice all the time” yet you list the shining as one of your favorite films, even though it stars Jack Nicholson a man who was known to occasionally become violent with his girlfriends in the early 70s. So i guess you don’t “condemn violence and inhumanity and injustice all the time”. Or maybe your judging Nicholson off of his art, and not his personal life (thats an idea), even though he has put forth the information about his domestic violence in print.
“This statement is repellent.”
i believe a more appropriate word would be that my statement was repugnant, not repellent.
“And i think as you get a little older you will realize this. How old are you by the way?”
Its strange that you find it necessary to fall back on old playground quips (including questioning someone’s knowledge based on their age) when all i did was present a differing opinion than you. Maybe you come on this forum to throw about childish insults in hopes of making yourself, and your poor arguments seem important, but i believe most people come here to have decent conversations about film.
This is a list of a few other filmmakers, actors, and writers who have done things which the “majority” (and i stress majority) of America (I say america, because i have grown up in the American hegemony my whole life, and cannot say with certainty that some of the following activities or habits are looked down upon by the populous of another country.) would find distasteful.
Roman Polanski – unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (13)
Woody Allen – Having sex with his adopted daughter
Dennis Hopper – A known drug addict, and woman abuser
Martin Scorsese – Drug addict, and adulterer
Francis Ford Coopola – Adulterer
Paul Shcrader – Violence towards men and women, known drug addict
William Burroughs – Shot and killed his wife in a drunken game of William Tell
Hunter Thompson – known woman abuser
Jack Nicholson – Known woman abuser
Anjelica Huston – Domestic Violence
Dudley Moore – Arrested for domestic violence
Vincent Gallo – Known racists and bigot
D.W. Griffith – Birth of a Nation, do I need to say more?
Oliver Stone – arrested for drunk driving and possession of hashish
Frank Sinatra – Known woman abuser
Jackson Pollock – Known woman abuser, and alcoholic
and
George Lukas – 2 counts of rape, Indian Jones, and Star Wars (he should be arrested for these if you ask me)
the list goes on, but i believe the point has been made.
" I was just curious and wanted to create a dialogue about what are the limits to creating art?"
I find nothing wrong with this, in fact i think it was a great discussion topic, WHICH evolved into an even more interesting discussion.
“It kind of doesn’t surprise me that the internet auteur/cinephile/faux intellectual crowd would fall back on weak ethics and rhetoric.”
Well i’m glad your able to tell that everyone on this board is a faux intellectual with weak ethics (a subjective statement in itself) just by reading their thoughts on a subject.
Glad you brought up that list of folks… and if you knew me personally you would know very well that I think….
Roman Polanski = deserves to be in jail
Sinatra = a joke
Woody Allen = a joke
Gallo = a fucking joke
etc etc etc….
I tend not to respect scumbags.
I’m glad you don’t respect scumbags, and while i don’t know you personally i do know that you “tend to condemn violence and inhumanity and injustice all the time” so now you have an even bigger list of people that you can have no respect for. Your Welcome.

For real, he is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
Does anyone else feel that he deserves to be included within the criterion collection?

I agree, and Anton Newcomb has come out and said that its not an accurate portrayal of him. But i would say it an ok portrayal of one side of him.
Apparently Ondi shot over 2000 hours of footage. So your bound to see the worst of people, especially under those circumstances.
I would say its right up there with Robert Franks Cocker Sucker Blues, and The Maysles Gimmie Shelter

I also appreciate the approach that Ondi uses, as opposed to something like No Direction Home which looks back on Dylans career in retrospect.
