I have never seen this film nor do I own it. However, I would love to see it (and own it).
The cheapest I have seen it online for is about $30 (it’s fairly rare as some of you may know).
I never pay over $20 for anything I have not seen unless it is a Criterion release. Hence, this cover:
This one is just for kicks. I might make another one. This film just has too much to play with:
Thanks to all for contributing. This is good exercise!
When you spend hours every night debating with yourself what the hell to watch!
When you have over 100 dvd’s in your collection you have not seen yet because you cannot decide which one you should watch first!
When you want to shoot yourself because you accidently purchased a “full screen” version.
When you find yourself explaining to people the difference between wide screen and full screen.
When you want to punch someone at your video store who walks in to return a rental saying, " This movie is messed up, I can only see the middle of the picture, the top and bottom is covered in black."!
All of these are great! I cant wait to get back into this! It would be nice to see some more westerns.
I will be contributing one a little later of one of my all time favorites.
1) The Seven Samurai (recent version)
2) The BRD Trilogy
3) Salo (recent version)
4) Rebel Samurai Sixties: Swordplay Classics
5) The Adventures of Antoine Doinel
6) Brazil 3 disc
7) Two Lane Blacktop
8) Vampyr
9) Pandora’s Box
10) Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara
11) Ace in the Hole
12) Eisenstein – The Sound Years
13) Equinox
14) I am Curious
15) Harakiri
16) Spartacus
17) Rashomon
Every time I hear about or see Short Cuts somewhere, it’s like a punch in the gut only because I had the opportunity to buy it for about 7 bucks once! The Adventures of Antoine Doinel has been one of the best buys I ever made. The only problem is that it left me with an extra copy of the 400 Blows.
It was the version with the book (aarrgh) ! The only thing I dislike about The Adventures of Antoine Doinel design is that if you like to display you Criterions in numerical order, you are screwed. I actually use it as a book end next to my Eclipse series to support the rest of my Criterion shelf. Dude, I saw a sign outside of my local Borders. I hope I can still find some good stuff!
I really love this film. I learned about in a BBC documentary about “Snuff” films.
This film’s date is supposed to be 1979 (my birth year). If you look closely it says 1980.
I was pretty much too lazy to change it and figured 1980 was close enough.
This is part of a box set I am working on. It consists of 2 Suzuki Yakuza flicks (neither on Criterion). I hope to finish it soon. The second film is a bit of a challenge since I cannot find an image which really captures the essence of it (to my satisfaction).
I think they have/had a deal where if you spend $500 you get a $50 gift card to use for the criterion store. I get the Criterion Newsletter emailed to me as well and from time to time they have special offers and coupons. Currently, there is a sale on the 400 Blows. The best deal by far was some months ago where they actually had a “moving” sale where everything was 40% off (you better believe I stocked up). You might want to subscribe to the newsletter or sign up for the mailing list. Most titles from the store are discounted already from the original MSRP so one way or another you get a decent deal.
1) Raiders of the Lost Ark
2) The Seven Samurai
3) Stand and Deliver
4) Ace in the Hole
5) The Bicycle Thieves
6) The Sword and the Sorcerer
7) Amorres Perros
8) The Yakuza Papers parts 1 thru 5 (count as one to me)
9) James Bond: A View to a Kill
10) Pale Rider
The dvd version I own of Vanishing Point is actually a double sided disc which contains the US release (98 min) on one side as well as the UK version with Charlotte Rampling (106 min) on the other. It’s pretty easy and cheap to find online for those interested.
No problem Eli! I’m trying to do as much of these requests as possible aside from the films I would like to see get the Critreatment. Yes, I did say Critreatment! I know it’s a bit cheesy but it’s less typing than Criterion Treatment. You all will thank me for it later. Ok, I better get back to work.

Needless to say the beauty of the Criterion Collection is that there is something in there for EVERYBODY (even “Joe Six Pack”)! I think that is what the company prides itself in (or is it?). I really doubt the decision makers for the company see their films being displayed alongside some guy’s Maxim magazine collection but you have to ask yourself, how else could they make the money to license the rest of the collection?

Does anyone know if 1.33:1 is the original aspect ratio?
