A master stroke is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen this movie several times and it never fails to send a shiver up my spine while keeping me in awe of the incredible cinematography and art direction. In my opinion this movie ranks as one of the top five psychological thrillers ever made. The systematic mental breakdown of Catherine Deneuve’s character is fascinating and horrifying. Expertly conceived, written, directed and acted it is early Polanski at his creepiest and finest. So, quite frankly I don’t understand the head scratching and musing as to why Criterion would release this. I always asked myself “why wouldn’t they?” I used to have the VHS that Columbia put out several years ago and it was made from an excellent print. Loaned that to someone and never saw it again. The previous DVD versions of this movie were horrendous in picture and sound quality, so I am very excited that Criterion is releasing Repulsion on Blu Ray in a lovingly restored version, as they always do. Here, here Criterion!
The Tenant would be a great bookend release to Repulsion as the theme of both movies is very similar. It would be great if Criterion could get the rights. Though laced with far more tongue-in-cheek humor than Repulsion, The Tenant is very unsettling and chilling with moments of absolute terror. Then there’s Polanski’s macabre ultra-violent version of MacBeth which is also and eye opener (Polanski’s primal scream after the murder of his wife). I could go on and on.
John Frankenheimer. I did speak to him once several years ago at a book signing in Los Angeles and he was a very nice man. When I told him “Seconds” was my favorite of his movies he was very appreciative and shook my hand and proceeded to share a couple of anecdotes with me about the making of the movie. I would have loved to have lunch with him and heard more. Also to talk to him about Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, The Train etc.
