Ok, the topic name is crap, but wasn’t sure what else to call it. I am thinking of those small & subtle details in a film that are usually the creation of a very good actor or director. Although they are generally very quick they can add extra depth to a character or to the plot. I have a couple in mind:
In ‘The Exorcist’ I love the way Lt. Kinderman (Lee J. Cobb) stirs his cup of tea when he is talking to Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn). I find it mesmerising.
In ‘Alien’, Ash (Ian Holm) does this funny little jog on the spot after he closes one of the ship doors. I imagined it was some quirky android thing and maybe the first sign he is going haywire.
When I think of Greenaway I think: death, literature, food, art. All of his work seems to somehow combine these themes but in such wonderful and creative ways – and often very literal ways. I always feel like doing something creative after watching one of his films. I haven’t seen all of his films – but “The Cook, the Thief” and “Pillowbook” are prob my favourites. I did happen to catch a documentary about Charles Darwin on TV once and you could immediately tell that it was Greenaway’s work. Same wonderful set design.
Whether it is a music “super group” like the New Pornographers or The Travelling Wilburries or the team up of 19th century literary figures in Alan Moore’s ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ I think it is exciting to see an ensemble of great characters or artists.
So I thought it would be fun to come up with some “Leagues” or “Super Groups” of our own. They could be heroes or villains.
- David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth
- Joe Morton in The Brother from Another Planet
- Jeff Bridges in Star Man
- E.T. in E.T.

To kick us off I propose…
“The League of Pest Exterminators!”
