nallan: Filmography

I actually gave this movie a low rating when I first watched, but it is one of those films that really lingers. I still think about scenes from the film and the different textures. I feel the richer for having seen it.

Hugo

The best part of the movie where when we started to see flashbacks to the old films that this movie is supposed to pay homage to. The behind the scenes look at Melies creating some of his films was fun too. The surrounding story was quite dull, the child actors were grating and the design was so artificial that I felt distanced from the characters and the story throughout. I miss old Scorsese.

A Serious Man

Good article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-shasha/a-serious-man_b_717461.html This film makes a bit more sense to me now.

A Serious Man

Interesting the Nicholas Roeg is the DP on this film...I guess he is another filmmaker who got his start with Corman.

Dogville

Brutal but great film. Kidman and Bettany are very good. BTW...In your library of films to watch, 'Dogville' is under 'Comedy'. That's funny.

Dogville

Possibly my favourite Woody Allen film.

Ken Loach

Ken Loach has put (or is in the process of putting) 16 of his films on YouTube. Very cool. http://www.youtube.com/show/kenloach

Shutter Island

Scorsese takes you on a nice ride but I think most people who have watched a few thrillers in recent years will know almost exactly where this is going in about 15 minutes. Kind of sad to see a master doing something so pedestrian, even though it is hard not to admire the craftsmanship.

Thirst

Agree with Giosue. Started off well but the story kind of lost it toward the end. Still a good vampire film and I want to check out Chan-Wook's other work.

Drag Me to Hell

I thought this movie was really a lot of fun the first time round. Some good scares and I laughed a lot. But I watched a 2nd time with friends at Halloween and I didn't enjoy it anywhere as much. I still think it is a well crafted and entertaining popcorn flick and one of the better horror films in recent years.

Rope

This is probably one of my favourite Hitchcock films and my favourite Jimmy Stewart performance. I think it is a genuine psychological thriller. A really good look at human morality and the way that intellectual arrogance can dehumanise.

Apocalypse Now

I first saw this film when I was about 16 and it was a revelation. The opening scene is one of my favourites with Martin Sheen in the Saigon hotel and the cuts to the jungle being napalmed with 'The End' playing over the top. I bought 'Redux' when it came out and was disappointed. I think the original cut is better, while Redux is still interesting from a film theory/history pov.

Code 46

I really enjoyed this film. It was great the way they used shots of Shanghai and other locations in the present day but presented like it was the future. Kind of like Alphaville in that way or the first part of Solaris. I often find sci fi films a lot more absorbing when they are presented that way - they become a lot more about mood and atmosphere.

Blade Runner

I don't know that any vision of the future in any film has come close. I just wish there was more of it. I would love to be absorbed in this world for longer. A series of shorts would be great - similar to the Animatrix animations for The Matrix (that's a mouthful).

Blood Simple

The Coens Bros were clearly talented from the get go! This is one of their best IMO. In style and quality it is up there w/ Fargo, and No Country.

Dancer in the Dark

One of those films that stayed with me for a while. The final scenes are gut wrenching. Quite amazing the way that Von Trier filmed with video but the musical scenes still felt so large and ran well with the rest of the movie. Bjork gives a great performance.
