Of the commentaries that I have heard my favorite is Hunter S. Thompson talking about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Although insight on the movie is not really what you will get from it.
After reading all 23 pages……….I concur on the following:
Local Hero – needs a much better package, but pretty sure this is WB.
Before Sunrise/Sunset would be great.
Infernal Affairs – the US DVD is a joke, the cover being especially awful.
Waiting for Guffman/ Best in Show/ A Mighty Wind – All WB, but barebones DVDs. There are supposedly hours of deleted scenes for each of these which haven’t surfaced.
And a couple I didn’t read but would like:
The Killer (Woo) I know they already did this, but it is OOP and there is no other US edition available.
Caro Diario (Moretti) No US edition of this is available, would be a great edition.
Too many of the posts on this thread seem to be well liked movies that a few people I know don’t like. Not reviled movies I like. Many consider Oldboy one of the best movies of the decade.
Also, I’ve never met a soul who didn’t like Galaxy Quest, maybe hadn’t seen it, but didn’t like?
So here is what I will throw out:
Oscar starring Stallone, I’ve always liked this movie, and can find very few other fans.
Most any movie starring Jim Varney as Ernest P. Warrel, especially Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Scared Stupid, basically kids movies, but I’ve always loved them.
But to really list stinkers, here are movies I like from this list http://www.everyonesacritic.net/movie_rank.asp?list=bottom
Leonard, Part 6-just ridiculous. I don’t know why there is so much hate for this.
Anaconda-Jon Voight is great in this.
Problem Child-if only for the line “Hi, I’m Junior, my favorite color is blue, what’s yours?”
Lost in Space-I enjoyed this, although I have no attachment to the original.
Striptease- really does capture Hiassen pretty well. Badly advertised.
I had a really hard time watching The Departed. I had seen Infernal Affairs twice by then and expected a competent remake. So many things bothered me about it though. Some shots stolen almost exactly from the original. The Wahlberg character did not exist in the original and adds nothing but confusion to the plot. And the saddest thing is the ending, Americanization if I ever saw it. We wouldn’t know what to do if the villain got away with it, so we’ll add this character to kill him at the end of the movie.
I know I didn’t get to see it with fresh eyes, but it is sad that a groups of people took a movie I thought was nearly flawless, screwed up a ton of its and raked in money and awards in the process.
Any of these could be mine depending on what day it is.
(alphabetical)
Amelie
City of God
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Infernal Affairs
Oldboy
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Squid and the Whale
Matt Parks got it right. The story is about Sheriff Bell, that is why the movie isn’t over when Brolin dies. This is much easier to see in the book, and in my mind the only flaw in the translation is that narration in the book doesn’t recur in the movie as often. I don’t get why there is confusion about who the story is about though. It is called No Country for Old Men.
Just as Psycho is about Bates. And not the character we follow for a good portion of the movie who is killed.

I’m not a big fan of Repulsion. Give my The Tenant or Rosemary’s Baby any day.

Akira, are you saying you prefer the Oz movie made before 1939?
